Rohliks' $100,000 Gift Provides
for New Hebrew Schools' Building

A contribution of $100,000 for a
new Southfield building of the
United Hebrew Schools was an-
nounced this week by Louis Tab-
ashnik, president of United Jewish
Charities, and Hyman Safran,
president of the Jewish Welfare
Federation.
The gift was made by Mr. and
Mrs. Sigmund Rohlik on the oc-
casion of the 78th birthday of Mr.
Rohlik, a Detroit philanthropist
and businessman.
The funds will be used toward
the construction of the Sigmund
and Sophie Rohlik School, which
will be part of a community cam-

BONN (JTA) — A survivor
of the wartime liquidation of the
Grodno ghetto in occupied Poland,
who is now a resident of New
York, testified in a trial in Cologne
of two former Nazi participants
in the destruction of the ghetto.
Max Dolub told the court that
he had watched from a hiding
place the activities of the Nazi
execution squad which killed 20
Jews in March 1943, but that he
could not say whether Kurt Wiese
and Heinz Errelis, the defendants,
had taken part in the shootings.
The court later rejected a de-
mand by the defense attorney that
the presiding judge be removed for
alleged prejudice. The demand
arose from the dismissal by Judge
Von Mallinckrodt of Dolub, who
collapsed from exhaustion while
undergoing c r o s s examination.
Dolub made s e r i o u s charges
against one of the defendants in
connection with the massacre.
The defense objected at the
time because Dolub had announc-
ed prior to the trial that April 4
was the only day he would be
available to give testimony. The
judge released him from further
appearance in court.

An Amerian republic has an ob-

Delvalle of Panama.
President Delvalle's elevation to
his office has not been without
controversy. A civil war of sorts
is now going on as to who Pan-
ama's legitimate president is. Until
March 24, the president was Marco
Aurelio Robles, but the National
Assembly deposed him for alleg-
edly participating in unconstitu-
tional partisan politics and then
swore in the first vice president,
Max Delvalle.
Actually Delvalle had already
seen brief service as acting presi-
dent when Robles was out of the
country. But now, officially at

Max Delvalle, a member of
Panama City's Congregation Kol
Shearith Israel, is probably de-
scended from a well-known Seph-
ardic family which moved from
the Iberian Peninsula to Amster-
dam in the 17th C e n t u r y
and ultimately settled on Curacao.
From that island, some of the Del-

from there to Panama. There have
been Delvalles in the Panama con-
gregation since the 1880's.

Though Delvalle is today offi-
cially president of the Republic of
Panama, he is in a sense a counter-
president—which brings to mind a
fascinating parallel, one that took
place in the Middle Ages. In the
12th Century, Pietro Pierleoni was
crowned Pope with the name Ana-
cletus II. The third-generation de-
scendant of a Rom an Jewish
banker named Baruch, he had be-
come a cardinal and was then
elected Pope by a Roman faction.
Innocent II was elected Pope by
another faction, but the Romans
supported Anacletus till his death
in 1138. His enemies attacked him
as a "Jew Priest," and Voltaire
referred to him as the "Jewish
Pope."
