Chaplains Coordinate Passover Seder

Mass Seders in three Vietnam areas will be conducted with
holiday kosher foods from the National Jewish Welfare Board. The
coordination of plans was undertaken by (from left) Chaplains
Franklin C. Breslau, Sheldon M. Kirsch of Detroit, Sholom I. Gliksman
and Gerry J. Rosenberg, the four Jewish chaplains in Vietnam,
at a meeting in Cam Ranh Bay. Solo Seders—Passover meals in a
package from JWB—have been given to men whose assignments
make it impossible for them to take part in the large-scale seders
at which the chaplains will officiate.

Buffalo Federation Study Reveals
Continued Jewish Exodus to Suburbs

BUFFALO (JTA) — A cori-
tinuing exodus of Jewish families
from the city of Buffalo to its
suburbs has been reported by the
United Jewish Federation of Buf-
falo which recently completed a
study of the Erie County Jewish
population.
In 1957, the federation reported,
63 per cent of Greater Buffalo's
Jews lived in the city and 37 per
cent lived in the suburbs. In 1963,
the federation said, the total Jew-
ish population of the county was
equally divided between the city
and the rest of the county. In 1966,
the year most recently studied, the
city had 45 per cent and the county
had 55 per cent. About 10,330

aims and the Suez Canal's con-
struction, its rule under the British
and the subsequent confiscatory
tactics of Gamel Abdul Nasser.
Because his study is in the
main — more than half of the
book—devoted to current situa-
tions, the immediate pre-Israel,
the events relating to the decade
and a half since the emergence
of Israel and the role of Nasser,
Blaxland's book has great signi-
ficance for students of Middle
East affairs at this time.
Blaxland goes into great detail
in reviewing the British rule, the
attitude of the Labor Party under
Attlee and Bevin, the Egyptian
anti-British campaigns.
Reference is made to the earlier
actions, to Disraeli's interest in
acquiring domination for Britain
over the Suez — all these facts
being relevant to an understanding
of the antagonism that developed
in Egypt before Nasser and under
the present dictator's rule.
The tragic role of Prime Min-
ister Anthony Eden during the
Sinai Campaign period in 1956
is thoroughly evaluated here and
with reference to the American
actions Blaxland calls Secretary
of State Dulles' acts as having
been performed in a "clumsy and
tactless manner," stating that
President Eisenhower had acted

"almost as tactlessly."

"Egypt and Sinai—Eternal Bat-
tleground," by Gregory Blaxland,
published by Funk and Wagnalls
(380 Madison, NY17) assumes an
important place in the newly-pub-
lished literature on the Middle
East. Researched as a historical
outline of the military history of
the embattled area, this study is
valuable for an understanding of
the background of events that pre-
ceded the current situation.
The Middle East has been viewed
as a "battleground" by earlier
writers. In 1936 Hilaire Belloc au-
thored "The Battleground — Syria
and Palestine — The Scapegoat
of Religion." Belloc was not a
friend of Zionism. With G. K. Ches-
terton he was rated among the au-
thors unfriendly to Jewry. His book
viewed the situation then as a
grave threat to Zionism.
Blaxland, whose research dates
from "The Invaders' Prey" — 525
BCE-1798 CE — through the 1956
Sinai Campaign occurrences, with
references also to the June Six-Day
War, goes into detail analyzing
the historic experiences, through
the ages, including the Napoleonic
efforts to gain control of the area,
the Crusaders' roles, the British

Jews live in the city and 12,500 in
the rest of the county.
The federation found that the
percentage of Jews in the city
has been decreasing annually by
about two per cent, reflecting
moves by Jewish families into
other parts of Erie County or out
of the area. The suburban Jew-
ish population has been growing
by 2 per cent annually, indi-
cating both the Jewish families
from outside the county who are
moving in, as well as the fami-
lies moving from Buffalo to the
suburbs.
The federation found that the
number of Jewish families in
Greater Buffalo dropped from
7,563 in 1963 to 7,364 in 1966.
Federation officials cited data from
the Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds indicating that
5 to 10 per cent of Jewish families
may not be known to local federa-
tions. On that basis, the .officials
here estimated that 25,000 Jews
