As "a reader on America's major educational problem," this collec- tion of essays probes into a serious issue and provides data on facing and solving the problem. Among the eminent participants in this series are Dr. Bruno Bet- telheim, Prof. Martin Deutsch, Dr. Eli Ginzburg, Paul Goodman, Prof. Edgar Z. Happy Passover MAGIC TEXTILE WEAVERS TOPINKA'S Across from the Fisher Theater Miami Beach's Neal Walk, 19, was named to the Associated Press second team All-America basket- ball team, and the United Press International's third team. Walk became the first player to make All-America at Florida in the school's 55-year basketball history. He was a unanimous All-South- eastern Conference choice. A 6-10, 225-pound junior center, Walk led the nation in rebounding, and established 12 new individual season records at Florida as well as two Southeastern Conference marks. His Florida records in- clude: most points, 663; highest scoring average, 26.5; most re- bounds, 494; best rebound average, 19.8 and most rebouds, 31. against Alabama. Florida ended the sea- son with a 15-10 mark, with good wins over Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt twice. Following the Kentucky victory, the Wildcats' coach Rupp said: "We didn't have a man who could handle him, not even two who could handle him. I think Walk could give Lew Alcindor a good battle." Vanderbilt's coach said: "He's the best big man in the Southeast- ern Conference." "I've never seen a player im- prove so much from one year to the next," commented the Alabama coach. Walk attributes his improvement to a summer at Kutcher's camp in the Catskills. He worked as a coun- selor, and played basketball against top college players at every opportunity. "It gave me confi- dence," said Neal, "helped my speed and I put on weight." Invited to participate in the Olympic trials, Walk, a business major, reluctantly declined. "One of the finest honors an athlete can have is to represent his coun- try in the Olympic Games," Walk said. "I am extremely disappointed that, after talking to my professors and counselors, I must decline this invitation. My schedule of courses in business will be such that I could not miss two weeks in the spring and over a month in the fall quarter and still make normal progress toward a degree." Dave Newmark of Columbia also received end-of-season rec- ognition. The Sporting News named the seven-footer to its All-America honorable mention list. Newmark was one of the main reasons Columbia gained its first Ivy League title in 17 years. Coach Roy Rubin's Long Island U. squad closed the basketball sea- TR 5-2614 son with a 21 -1 record (20 straight), and were named the top small college club in the country. The Blackbirds - accepted a bid to Madison Square Garden's National Invitation Tournament. Harry Litwack's Temple Owls, 18-9, also participated in the NIT. Brandeis, under new coach K. C. Jones, achieved its first winning season in six years. The Judges were 11-10. Basketball lost two outstand- ing coaches with the retirement of Sam Cozen and Bill Spiegel. Cozen recorded over 200 victories in 15 years at Philadelphia's Drexel Tech, and Spiegel, a New York City high school coach for 41 years, had a record of 620-84, a winning percentage of .881. Mike Simon of Tufts and Mel Goldstein of Brooklyn College were two small-college centers who did a fine job this past season. When UCLA's All-America Lew Alcindor was in high school in New York City, his coach Jack Donahue refused to allow any col- lege coaches near him. All but one was barred from the dressing room. Donahue revealed that he didn't mind when Yeshiva's Red Sarachek came around to say hello.
