Is America's largest flying bird, the California condor, doomed to extinction? According to the New York Times of Oct. 30, 1967, only 46 of these rare birds were sighted this year, a decrease of five over 1966. The exact cause of the pop- ulation drop is still not known, but it seems certain that a large measure of responsibility rests with hunters, who continue to kill the condor despite the fact that it is protected by law, by the Cali- fornia Department of Fish and Game, and by the United States Forest Service. A recent proposal to build a road through tthe con- dor's nesting g r o u n d further threatens its life.
