Jewish Leaders Vow to Pursue Dr. King's Goals

(Continued from Page 27)
York paid tribute to Dr. King's
memory and achievements.
Rabbi Israel Miller, conference
chairman, called Dr. King "a
spokesman for the finest values
of our nation, and indeed for all
humanity." Dr. King's historic
speech on the sufferings of Soviet
Jewry, delivered on a nationwide
hook-up during Hanuka in De-
cember 1966, was replayed at
the memorial program, at which
Detroit's Jewish Community
Council was represented.
A resolution voicing "sorrow and
shock" and pledging rededication
to the goals for which Dr. King
died, was adopted unanimously by
members of Bnai Zion attending
the annual bill of rights conference
of the fraternal order. Norman G.
Levine, conference chairman, an-
nounced that Bnai Zion would plant
a grove of 1,000 trees in the Ken-
nedy Freedom Forest in Jerusa-
lem, bearing Dr. King's name.
Rabbi Henry Siegman, executive
vice president of the Synagogue
Council of America, was among
the New York delegation at the
funeral Tuesday, and Rabbi Abra-
ham Joshua Heschel, foremost
Jewish philosopher and professor
at the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary, spoke briefly on the death
of his friend.
Scores of Jewish leaders
joined with representatives of
labor, civil rights organizations
and others in the memorial march
for Dr. King and demonstration
of support for Memphis garbage
strikers Monday.
(It had been the strike that
brought Dr. King on his ill-fated
mission to Memphis).
The Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, which was repre-
sented at the march by Albert
Vorspan and Rabbi Balfour Brick
ner, has long been associated with
the program of the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference,
which Dr. King headed. Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, president
of the UAHC, was one of the first
prominent religious leaders to in-
troduce Dr. King, at a time when
he was relatively unknown.
The Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Dr.
King's successor. was the only
Negro member of an international
interreligious peace mission which
toured the world last year, under
the co-chairmanship of Rabbi
Eisendrath.
On March 24, a group of lay
and religious leaders of the Re-
form movement endorsed Dr.
