THE DETROIT—JEWISHNEVV Rabinical Council's Guide Asks Rabbis in Work With Colle°e M111111111P ts b Studen 26—Friday, April 5, 1968 NEW YORK — A series of pro- posals aimed at bridging the gap between increasing numbers of alienated Jewish college youth and their synagogue and home environ- ment were recommended to Re- form rabbis by the youth commit- tee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. A special book, "Working With College Students—a Handbook for Rabbis," prepared by the CCAR group, analyzes the causes and conditions leading to the rebellion of youngsters on the college cam- pus against the religious estab- lishment and Jewish values, con- sidered by many youngsters to- day "irrelevant" to the problems of everyday life. Equal Opportunity Employers Named in First National Listing of Its Kind CHICAGO — The first national directory of 3,931 business firms committed to equal opportunity in all aspects of employment has been published here by Project Equality. It will be used by more than 7,000 churches, synagogues and re- ligious institutions participating in the interfaith fair employment drive that will give preference to the listed firms in all purchases of goods and services. PE offices in five cities, includ- ing Detroit, are publishing local buyers' guides as well. The national guide is a com- pilation of 976 national and 2,955 local or regional firms doing business with religious institu- tions. They include 40 of the top 500 U.S. corporations and range down to small neighborhood bus- inesses. Listing in the buyers' guide means a firm has signed a pledge to hire and promote without dis- crimination, has filed a report form with PE detailing the num- ber of its minority-group em- broken clown by job ployes classification — and has pledged to take further affirmative actions. The names of firms listed in the buyers' guides are available only to religious groups participating in the program. - Rev. George A. Fleischer, chair- — MAC-0-LAC PAINT SALE! Rabbi Balfour Brickner reported. The project is sponsored by the commission on interfaith activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Central Con- ference of American Rabbis, and the Jewish Chautauqua Society, all institutions of Reform Judaism. The Protestant and Catholic churches have sponsored such ac- tivities widely for several years, but the Reform program is the first under Jewish religious sponsorship, according to Rabbi Brickner, di- rector of the commission. He ex- plained that efforts were continu- ing to arrange for more such placements for student rabbis this summer. The rabbinic intern works with Protestant and Catholic urban min- isters to study at first hand the problems of the urban poor; to pro- vide help in specific anti-poverty efforts, to probe the tensions be- tween whites and Negroes, evalu- ate the response of public and pri- vate agencies to the problems of the inner cities and examine the attitudes of the Jewish community toward the urban crisis. He also is expected to make proposals on action programs the Jewish com- munity might undertake for the urban poor, Rabbi Brickner said. In each instance. the internship is under sponsorship of the local Reform congregations, or, as in St. Louis, under sponsorship of the SL Louis Federation of Reform Congregations. The other cities for this summer are Washington, Chi- cago and Milwaukee. The student rabbi reports to the local commu- nity relations council executive and to the commission, on a week- ly basis. Rabbi Jack Stern, CCAR youth chairman, observed that "many youngsters today are particular- ly disturbed about the Vietnam war and the military draft. While many of our young peo- ple involve themselves actively in peace organizations, civil rights causes and other social activities, we have failed to make them understand the relationship between the teachings of Juda- ism and the ideals they carry out into action." The Reform rabbi considered it * imperative that "Jewish youngsters Id. fully understand the ethical, moral and theological foundations of Ju- daism to apply them in their de- cision-making process on the many social and personal questions con. fronting them today."
