(JTA)—Two University of California sociolo- gists reported at a university sym- posium on the patterns of American prejudice that a majority of the church- and synagogue - attending laity reject the virtually unanimous stand taken by official church and synagogue bodies against religious and racial prejudice. Dr. Charles Y. Glock and Rod- ney Stark, participants in the re- search program upon which the forum was based, warned in their report that "one cannot assume too readily that religion is a powerful and reliable force against pre- judice." The five-year research program was conducted by the university's survey research center under a $500,000 grant fom the Anti-De- famation League of Bnai Brith. Led by the two rabbis responsible for the strict kashrut at the Goodman plant, Rabbi Mendel Chodrow and Rabbi Alter Silverman, they went through the complete baking sequence. Specially prepared flour and water was utilized, and each of the rabbis participated in the ceremony, while suitable songs and prayers were offered by a cantor. From the mixing of the flour and the rolling of the dough, through the baking process, to the finished product must not exceed 18 minutes according to the law and ritual. This was carefully observed and watched by all present, and the expressed opinions of the efficiency and thorough. ness of the operation were fully noted by those present. Through each of the steps of the preparation and baking, both Rabbi Chodrow and Silverman explained the essential mechanical sequences, and answered all questions regarding the kashrut. He warned that "the more virulent backers of racism have united behind the candidacy of George Wallace." The symposium was also ad- dressed by Undersecretary of Com- merce Howard J. Samuels, who said that American industry had greater possibilities for immediate and significant action in breaking down the walls of prejudice and discrimination than any other as- pect of society. He noted that it was in jobs that the Negro feels the effect of discrimination first and most sharply, but that the shop or office offers the best "built-in situation" for equal participation by the races. Rabbi Resigns from Pulpit to Do Civil Rights Work LOUISVILLE (JTA) — A Reform rabbi has resigned from the pulpit he held here for 22 years to serve as a civil rights official. Rabbi Martin M. Perley told the members of Cong. Brith Sholom, in his final sermon, that he had accepted the appointinent of executive director of the Louis- ville and Jefferson County Human Relations Commission because "re- ligion cannot be lived in a vacuum." Dr. Perley said he often had been chided for speaking out on civil rights, though his congrega- tion generally had acquiesced in his civil rights activities and adop- ted a strong statement on human rights in 1964. But his stand against the Viet- nam war "angered some of the most influential members of the congregation." That led him to conclude that he had failed to con- vey ."the true meaning of Juda- ism" as he understands it, the rab- bi said. Dr. Perley was elected head of the Kentucky Board of Rabbis two months ago and was previous- ly the director of the Hillel Foun- dation at Indiana University. He came to Louisville in 1946 after 3 1/2 years as an army chaplain during World War II. 995 New Zenith Super 50 Handcrafted Color TV Chassis with no printed circuits for unrivaled dependability.
