53rd YEAR

Prof. Heschel Defines Idea of Israel

Addressing the convention of the
Rabbinical Assembly of America, i
at the Concord, Kiamesha Lake,
N.Y., last week, Prof. Abraham
Joshua Heschel stated, in a paper
entitled "The Theological Mean-
ing, of the State of Israel:"
"Zion" is not a symbol but a
home, and the land is not an al-
legory but a right, a commitment
of destiny."
The return to Israel, is the
most magnificent testimony of the
possibility of redemption for all
men. Stand still and behold ! The
unbelievable has come about. The
vision was a divine promise, and
the way was paved with sacri-
fices."
Our return to Zion is a major
event within the mysterious his-
tory that began with a lonely man
—Abraham—whose destiny was to
be a blessing to all nations and
our irreducible commitment is to
assert that promise and that
destiny: to be a blessing to all
nations.
The State of Israel is not the
fulfillment of the Messianic prom-
ise, but it makes that promise
plausible. The return to Zion is
an event sui generis for which
there is no model and no analogy.
The restoration of Zion is not
new; it began on the day of its
destruction. The land was rebuilt
in time long before it was restored
in space. We have been building
it daily for nearly two thousand
years in our prayers.
The Jewish people has never

ceased to assert its right, its
claim, its title to the Land of
Israel. This continuous, uninter-
rupted insistence, an intimate in-
gredient of Jewish consciousness,
is at the core of our understand-
ing of the meaning of Jewish his-
tory and the vital element of
Jewish faith.
