BUCHAREST — The Federation
of Jewish Communities of Romania
ended its conference here Monday
after deciding to undertake a pro-
gram of information and education
to induce the younger generation
of Jews to join the communities
and participate in their affairs.
The conference was attended by
representatives of 50 Romanian
Jewish communities out of 75 in
the country which has a total popu-
lation of 100,000. It heard a re-
port by Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen,
president of the federation, who
thanked the Romanion government
and the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee for their support. Dr. Rosen
said the federation carries on a
comprehensive program of social
services and education and also
contributes to the repair of syna-
gogues and other Jewish institu-
tions.

Sees Member Become the President

PANAMA CITY — The political
crisis in Panama has focused at-
tention on the small Jewish com-
munity here.
Max Delvalle, recognized by the
opposition-controlled National As-
sembly of Panama as the legitimate
president, is a member of the
Panamanian Jewish community.

15 last year to attend an interna-
tional conference in Punta del Este,
Uruguay, Delvalle acted as presi-
dent of Panama. He was at that
time said to be the first Jewish
head of a state outside Israel.
Jews are active in the political,
intellectual and cultural life of
Panama. There is a Jewish deputy
in the National Assembly, who
won his seat as a member of the
Christian Democratic Party.
The Jewish population of Pan-
ama is approximately 1,800.
Sixty per cent of the Jews are
Sephardim. The largest Jewish
communities are in Panama City
(1,378) and Colon (257).
There are three congregations
in Panama City, each with its own
rabbi: one Reform, one Conserva-
tive and one Orthodox. A Jewish
center to serve all three groups
is under construction.
There is one Jewish school, the
Albert Einstein Institute, with an
enrollment of 350; of these, 80 per
cent are Jewish and represent 90
per cent of all Jewish children of
school age in Panama City.
The central representative body
of Panamanian Jewry is the Cen-
tral Jewish Community Council
of Panama. It is a member of the
Federation of Jewish Communities
of Central America and Panama,
the headquarters of which is pres-
ently in San Salvador. The federa-
tion in turn is affiliated with the
World Jewish Congress.

Italy Recalls Jews Slain
by Retreating Nazis

Memorial serv-
ices were held here for 335 Nazi
victims, among them 75 Jews, who
were massacred March 24, 1944 in
the Ardeatine caves as German
forces retreated from Italy before
the Allied armies.
The memorial was addressed by
Minister of Commerce and In-
dustry Andreotti who, referring to
the Israel-Arab dispute in the Mid-
dle East, declared that no political
or commercial calculations would
prevent Italy from expressing its
solidarity with the few survivors
of the millions of Jews extermina-
ted by the horrors of racial per-
secution in Europe.
