The PICCOLO TEATRO MUSI- CALE, of the City of Rome, coming to Masonic Auditorium for its pre- miere May 7, offers a rare treat with its definitive performances of Italian comic opera of the Baroque period. The little opera company of 40, founded and directed by Maestro Renato Fasano, features a roster of 16 of Italy's leading opera singers, headed by the noted baritone Sesto Bruscantini. Chayym Zeldis, former Detroiter whose poetry and prose writings have won wide acclaim, has col- lected a number of his noteworthy verses into an impressive book which has been published by Re- constructionist Press under the title "Seek Haven." Gathered in several sections subtitled "The Battle for Israel," "F or ef a the r s," "Holocaust," "Sparks" and "The Holy Land," Zeldis' creative efforts represent an inspired group of poems that are filled with feeling, based on impressions of the author's dedi- cation to Jewish lore, his life in Israel as a settler a number of years ago, his labors in research into Jewish historical experiences. The "Holocaust" group is es- pecially moving, including his poetic outcries in such verses as "For the Perished Children," "I Spoke to Messiah," "On the Barb- ed-Wire." This group commences with "I Searched for the Children" broods over the search for chil- dren "in the snow as far as my mind could go" and laments: "I dropped upon the frozen ribs of snow, searching as far as my body could go!' Holy Land and in "Mount Carmel," in which he is "dreaming of days gone by," he sings: "Dreaming in time's deep ocean, Of rain clouds bursting on your back And thunder's sullen groans When on your screaming tanks Elijah shattered Baal's dark altarstones!" This small book is filled with the result of a poet's muse that is marked by power, brilliant writ- ing, marked by a deep Jewish feeling. Chayym Zeldis had won an Avery Hopwood Award in Poetry at the University of Michigan and the John Day Novel Award at the New School for Social Research. He is the author of a novel, "Streams in the Wilderness."
