Instrument Assists in Hametz Sale

Homeowners may delegate the
power of attorney to Rabbi Jacob
Kranz to perform the mitzva
of "selling the hametz," according
to a legal contract drawn up for
Rabbi Kranz, of Cong. Mishkan
Israel.
The document, which is dupli-
cated on this page, conforms with
the precept that a Jew must sell
all leavened bread remaining in his
home before the Passover holiday
begins. Tradition provides, how-
ever, that the homeowner may hide
away all hametz and transact a
symbolic "sale" of the bread with
a non-Jew. For this, a rabbi acts as
intermediary for the members of
his congregation and after the holi-
day, the non-Jew "returns" the
bread to the seller.
Rabbi Kranz said the mitzva
is often neglected because it is
considered inconvenient. For this
reason, he has sought the legal
assistance of several attorneys,
