Austrian Theater Troup's Highly Praised in Israel

Two years ago, after diplomatic
relations had been established with
West Germany, a Swiss group per-
formed in German. This is the
first time, however, that Israelis
have been able to experience the
work of a country associated with
the Nazi era.

JERUSALEM — Capacity audi-
ences have welcomed the appear-
ance here of the Vienna Burg-
theater, a renowned theater group
which a few years ago would
have been barred.
Immigrants from Austria and
Germany make up the majority
of the admiring audience. Several
Jewish actors are in the company,
including Helene Thimig Rein-
hardt, widow of the renowned
director Max Reinhardt. The
troup's director is Prof. Ernst
Haeusermann, the son-in-law of
Reinhardt.
Three plays are being offered,
including Gotthold Lessing's "Na-
than .the Wise," a comedy "The
Concert" and "The Young Goethe,"
a reading of the young poet's
works and a variety of lectures
and readings in English and Ger-
man.

CAIRO—The United Arab Repub-
lic has lifted the ban on "Cleo-
patra," starring a friend of Israel,
Elizabeth Taylor. The reason for
the chief censor's change of heart
is that the film "is good propa-
ganda for Egypt."
"Cleopatra" was banned four
years ago because Miss Taylor
was on the blacklist for her as-
sistance to fund-raising drives for
Israel. Twentieth-Century-Fox, pro-
ducers of the multimillion-dollar
movie, plans to show "Cleopatra"
in 125 UAR theaters.
The Arab Lea g ue's boycott com-
mittee maintains the blacklist and
a variety of boycott measures
largely directed against foreign
concerns which deal with or in
Israel.
President Nasser is known to
have seen the movie at a private
screening and to have found it
unobjectionable. At least two other
films starring Miss Taylor are ex-
pected to be shown here soon —
"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
and "The Taniing of the Shrew."
