Hass Memorial Lecture at Temple Israel 8:30 p.m. April 10. In one of his rare speaking en- gagements in this country, Vis- count Samuel will discuss "Israel: Front-Page Politics and Behind- the-Scenes Intrigue." Weekly Quiz By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright 1968. JTA Inc.) Why is the naming of a boy de- layed until the circumcision takes place? Basically naming of the child is related to the circumcision cere- mony. The tradition has come into being to name the child immedi- ately after he has been physically circumcized. The reason for this, according to some opinions, is that the circumcision removes the im- purity from the soul of the child and he, therefore, becomes a pure soul which he is not before being circumcized. It should be pointed out that there are sometimes cir- cumstances whereby a boy is named before the circumcision takes place, e.g. where the circum- cision has to be delayed because of the health of the child, etc. It should be further noted that the Kabbalists have attached a sacred significance to the name especially since, in our Western tradition, the child is named after a de- ceased person. Why do some traditions ask for the father of the child to desist from working the day on which his son is circumcized? Some authorities (M'amar Mor- decai, orakch hayyim 468) claim that this is so because the father whose son is circumcized is con- sidered as if he had brought a sacrifice. In olden times work was forbidden for the person on the day of which he brought a sacri- fice to the Holy Temple. (Tosafot Pesahim 50a). Somehow the day on which one brought a sacrifice in olden times was supposed to have an air of sanctity which was not in con- sonance with ordinary work day activity. The same feeling was probably applied to the day on which one's son was circumcized. Sinking of 'Struma' Recalled in Romania BUCHAREST (JTA) — Ro- manian Jewry marked the 25th anniversary of the sinking of the Struma, a refugee ship that foundered in the Sea of Marmora in 1943 with 769 Jews aboard who were trying to escape to Palestine from Nazi - occupied Europe. Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen of Romania, in a memorial sermon delivered to worshippers in the Choral Temple here, denounced "those who could have saved" the Struma victims "by lifting a finger, but did not do so." He said the Struma has "become the symbol of guilt almost as great as that of the Fascist assassins." Rabbi Rosen also took the oc- casion to express the grief of Romanian Jewry over a con- temporary sea tragedy, the loss of the Israeli submarine Dakar with 69 aboard. The Struma was one of several small, over-aged ships that trans- ported Jewish escapees from Nazi Europe from Balkan ports but was denied entry to Palest- ine and other countries. The ves- sel went down with all aboard in a storm on the sea which lies between the Dardnelles and the Bosporus. TEL AVIV (JTA) — "Gen. de Gaulle" carried a pail of Iraqi oil through the streets of Haifa while "Egypt's Nasser" and "Jordan's King Hussein" conversed over the telephone in Tel Aviv, March 14. It was all in the spirit of the Purim carnival which began the night be- fore and reached a peak in the famed Adloyada—Israel's version of the Mardi Gras—that filled the streets with song, dances and especially children in the wildest costumes they could create. The international political figures appeared in the form of life-size puppets on mobile floats that inched their way through the throngs. An estimated half million spectators watched the Purim parade in Tel Aviv and only slightly fewer were witness to similar parades in Haifa. The Nasser-Hussein float was a pointed reference to the famous telephone conversation, monitored Israel during last June's Six- II by Day War, in which the Egyptian a leader and his Jordanian ally con- a trived the story of U.S. and British a air support for Israeli forces.
