CHARLIE HARRIS ORGAN TRIO

IT WAS THE first "Safari to
Las Vegas" by CKLW-TV Color-
vision 9 ... Everybody stayed at
the Riviera Hotel and had a lot
of fun . . . After getting off the
chartered turbo-jet, it was a won-
der that Jerry Kutris didn't float
to the hotel .. . He drank so much
tea that the hostesses kept bring-
ing it to him without even being
asked . . . Dave Shepherd regaled
some with his winning "system"
. . . Others on thq plane included
Sherwin Robinson, Marvin Raskin,
Dick and Budd Schaefer, Gene and
Marilyn Altschuler, Gerald and
Suretta Moser, Joe and Elayne
Metzer, Dave and Shirley Arbus,
Gene Zamler, Jack Ehrlich, Zel
Herman and ourselves . . . From
CKLW-TV were, Ed Metcalfe, Bill
Gatfield, Clark Grant, Dick Mc-
Closkey, Dean Murdock, Bob Van
Cleave, and Mike Wooster.
PLENTY OF DETROITERS live
in Las Vegas . . . Jack Shapiro,
former local jeweler, is still active
as part owner of the Silver Slipper
. . . Also there are Dave "Dudgy"
Yovis and Robert "Midgy" Meltzer
who used to own the gas station
across the street from Darbys,
and William "Buff" Ehrlich, now
maitre d', who came to Las Vegas
after hosting at the Detroit Press
Club . . . Sayly Davis is at the
Sands . . . Sol Bromberg is at the
Stardust . . . and a mutltitude of
others are strewn from one end of
the Las Vegas strip to the other.
VERY SADLY MISSED was
Irving "Pitt" Litwin, pit boss at
the Dunes who recently passed
away . . . "Pitt" came to Las
Vegas from Detroit in 1960 and
gained the reputation of helping
people who visited the wonder land
. . . As Dunes boss Eddie Moss
said, "He never learned how to
say no." .. . Pitt was a member
of Daylight Masonic Lodge here
and of the Las Vegag Tent of Cir-
cus Saints and Sinners.
LEONARD P A V I S, catering
manager at the Riviera, came to
Las Vegas from the Mayflower
Hotel in Washington and has made
quite a mark for himself as one
of the leaders in his field.
IN THE RIVIERA LOBBY, Jack
Ehrlich, on the plane with us, told
of wife Ida having her biggest
thrill during their recent trip to
Israel and Europe . . . At the King
David Hotel in Jerusalem, Gen.
Moshe Dayan came in for coffee
and they exchanged handshakes
together ... In Rome, Ida got into
four pictures taken of Pope Paul
being carried on his gold chair ...
It was reunion time in Las Vegas
for Jack and brother "Buff" at the
Silver Slipper.
CHARLES HARRISON, execu-
tive vice-president at the Riyiera,
is the former owner of Charles
Harrison's Manor Bar on Grand
River, which is still in operation
under the same name.
OUT AT THE Riviera Pool, we
bumped into Detroiters Hy and
Marilyn Blinder, who were with
Mike and Phyllis Mitz and had
come in after a trip to Tuscon,
Ariz. . . . Also there was ex-De-
troit community-ite Sid Harris ...
Can't believe he's been away about
eight years already ... Sid is now
a successful theatrical agent in
Chicago . . . He was in Las Vegas
with his songster-star Angelo Pic-
ardi, appearing at Caeser's Pal-
ace.
A BIG THANK YOU to CKLW-
TV for a swell time .. . and for
picking up the tab.
