Flint News Analyst, General Launch Campaign A poster illustrating the life-saving work of the United Jewish Appeal forms the backdrop for these principal planners of the Flint campaign, which opened with a dinner March 6. In the photo are (from left) Gilbert Y. Rubenstein, general campaign chairman; David Schoenbrun, famed radio-television correspondent; Brig. Gen. Yeshayahu Gavish, Israeli army commander; and Michael A. Pelavin, associate campaign chairman. Television news analyst David Schoenbrun, addressing the open- ing dinner of the Flint United Je.,zvish Appeal campaign March 6, asked "Why is America putting such great effort and so much money into Vietnam, backing a military dictatorship, instead of supporting a true democracy, such as Israel?" Schoenbrun shared center stage with Brig. Gen. Yeshayahu Ga- vish, Israeli Army commander, who told the group that during the Six-Day War, Israel "couldn't af- ford to lose. We had no other choice than to fight or be an- nihilated. We had to struggle for our survival while the Arabs could afford to wait." Gilbert Y. Rubenstein, chair- man of the campaign, said that while no goal has been set for the 1968 drive, many of the top donations so far are higher this year than last. Canal and also ended the blockade of Eilat by capturing Sharm el Sheikh. He said. "We have to re- main prepared militarily because the Arabs are not willing to work out alpeace arrangement." Shoenbrun, former chief of the CBS Washington bureau and chief European correspondent for the network, said that America and Russia "must begin to work to- gether for world stability and peace instead of competing to dominate . . . (and which) will end up destroying the world." Holland, Belgium, West Ger- many and Luxemburg want nego- tiations to be opened immediately with Israel for a preferential agreement. But objections were raised by Foreign Minister Amin- tore Fanfani of Italy, who stressed that while Italy had agreed to negotiate with Israel, he did not feel that the European Economic Community, the Euromart organi- zation, could do so before agree- ment was reached on Britain's application for Euromart member- ship. The French position remained unchanged. For political reasons stemming from the Six-Day War, France currently opposes any agreement between the EEC and Israel. A special EEC commission has recommended associate status for Israel, but because of the dif- ferences that have arisen it has been decided that the commission should "continue its studies" on the matter. Joseph Luns, the Dutch foreign minister, cited the stalemate over Israel as a reason for his objection to the opening of EEC talks with Algeria. v. aseweeis or** Wilerel/410 IONS isit , 41/4VIleeVar- PUT LEADER ON THE SPOT * * LZADER !ores ereazang better.
