To commemorate the death of
Rabbi Morris Adler, a musical
event which has stirred the sym-
nathic interest of people of all
faiths has been announced for
8:15 p.m. Tuesday at Ferndale
Hieh School by Louis P. Miller,
chairman of the board of the Oak
Park Symphony Society.
The society commissioned a
snecial work for this occasion by
young composer Louis Weingarden,
a native of Detroit, now of New
York. who was a graduate of the
Shaarey Zedek Religious School
and under the rabbi's influence
during his early years. He dedi-
cated "The Sorrows of David" to
the memory of Rabbi Adler.
In his notes on "The Sorrows of
David," Weingarden commented:
"The text dictated the form of
the first movement. There is a na-
tural refrain in thethree verses
which contain the words "How are
the mighty fallen." These verses
are like pillars of the movement,
supporting a structure of inter-
locking arches made of the other
verses . • •
"It was a unique burden for
a composer to write a work in
memory of two people he knew
well. On that Saturday two years
ago, my mother called me in
New York and told nie the hor-
rible news. Soon afterwards I
knew that someday I would set
to music David's lament over
Saul and Jonathan for my rabbi
and for my dear friend."
The composer, who is coming
to Detroit to conduct his work, has
won numerous awards, among
them the Eli i z a b e t h Sprague
Coolidge Prize, and he has been
recommended for the famous Prix
de Rome.
The program will include Ernest
Bloch's "Sacred Service," also per-
formed by the Kenneth Jewell
