Israel Women's Army Commander Stella Levy
to Address Pacesetters of Women's Division UJA
Fund drive will open with a

Women's Division Pacesetter Levy, commander of the women's

Israel's highest-ranking female of-
ficer.
The corps she heads won the re-
spect of Israel's fighting men for
its discipline and invaluable serv-
ices during the Six-Day War. Many
members served in front line units
in important capacities, though
they did not actually fight.
Col. Levy, born in Haifa in 1924,
was a descendant of a very old
Sephardic family which had settled
in Palestine generations before.
She joined the Hagana at an
early age. In 1942 she joined the
British Army, serving with the
Auxiliary Territorial S e r v i c e
(ATS) and attached to the signal
corps stationed in Egypt. After de-
mobilization she remained with the
British army as a secretary at
headquarters in Palestine.
A few days after Israel was
proclaimed an independent state,

Youth, will feature booths, food,
prizes and games. Children will
come dressed in costume, and
there will be prizes for the best.
Young Leaders to Hear
Talk, 'Jews in Jeopardy'
The next meeting of the Jewish
Community Council's Young Lead-
ership Group will be held 8 p.m.
Sunday at the home of Dr. and
Mrs. Edward Sharon. A speaker
from the national Joint Distribu-
tion Committee will discuss "Jews
in Jeopardy — Behind the Iron
Curtain and Elsewhere."
Youth on the Move
Harriet Bernstein, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Irving Bernstein. was ,
named to the dean's list at the Na-
tional College of Education, Evans-
ton-Wilmette, Ill.

in aid to needy people. U.S. food
donations and host governments'
support toward operating costs
multiplied the public contributions.

Young Leadership Group
Names Two From Flint
Young Jewish leaders from 74
American communities have been
elected to the Young Leadership
Cabinet of the United Jewish Ap-
peal. Representing Flint are Mi-
chael Pelavin, re-elected to the
cabinet, and Dr. Leon I. Rosky.
Pelavin is a member of the na-
tional executive committee of the
National Community Relations Ad-
visory Council; advisory board of
young leaders and national leader-
ship development Council of Jew-
ish Federations and W elf are
Funds: National Council of the
Joint Distribution Committee and
the NCRAC commission on church-
state and interreligious activities.
He is active in Flint Jewish life.
Dr. Rosky, a member of the
board and the executive committee
of the Flint Jewish Community
Council, is on the national council
of the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee.
The Young Leadership Cabinet
is the governing body of the Young
Leadership Council comprising
more than 12.000 men from 25 to
40 years of age who have shown
leadership potential in their home
communities.
In 1956, during the Sinai cam-
paign, she worked as a liaison of-
ficer in recruiting reserves and
later as an area commander. She
was appointed commanding officer
of the Women's Army in 1963.

The leadership of the Flint
Women's Division UJA campaign
will be Mesdames Asher Marder,
Gilbert Rubenstein and Sidney
Wolin, three women who have been
involved in the work of UJA for
many years, and each a former
Women's Division general chair-
man.
All have served as leaders in
women's organizations, as well as
on important committees of the
Flint Jewish Community Council.
Mrs. William Bailies has been
reappointed honorary chairman.
She has served on the council's
board and is currently serving on
the social welfare committee.
