What is a "Letz?"
"Letz" is a term currently. ap-
plied to a "joker," a "comedian"
or a "merrymaker." In biblical
literaure the term "Letz" referred
to one who "mocked" or "scorned."
Indeed the very first chapter of
the Psalms found the company of
such people rather undesirable
(Psalms 1:1). While this connota-
tion is often carried over into tal-
mudic literature (Sota 42a),
nevertheless another connotation
is developed in Talmudic literature
alongside of this unfavorable one.
We do find in the Talmud that a
"letz" is a name for an "enter-
tainer" or "musician" (Sanhedrin
101a) and the verb is used to signi-
fy entertainment rather than sheer
mockery or scorn (tosefta Shabat
6:4). In the Middle Ages such a
person came to be hired to provide
amusement and entertainment at
festivities such as weddings. One
author, who is especially harsh on
musicians, claims that the term
"letz" was applied to musicians be-
cause their art was a mere mockery
of the performance of the Levites
in the ancient Temple (Schudt,
Judische Merckwerdigkiten, Vol.
IV, p. 200). It is possible, then, that
the term "letz" which was original-
ly a term of disfavor, while it was
attributed to artists or entertainers
at first as a matter of ridicule,
nevertheless came to have a signi-
ficance of worth. Perhaps, the lat-
ter phase was brought about by
the many sufferings of the Jewish
people in Diaspora who appreciated
a lighter air to help them over-
come the pressure of despair in
their daily lives by providing some
light relief on festive occasions.

Why do some lead the bride
around the bridegroom three
times while others lead the
bride around the bridegroom
seven times?
Generally speaking, the custom
of escorting the bride around the
groom under the canopy is said to
be reflected in the Biblical verse
"And a woman shall go around a
man" (Jeremiah 31:22), Some take
this to mean that the groom is
led t understand that wherever
he tu ns he shall always have his
wife in mind, while others say that
a wife shall try to be part of her
husband's life at every turn. It is

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
military government announced
Tuesday that customs barriers will
soon be removed between Israel
and the West Bank.
A spokesman said there was no
need to maintain the checkpoints
because goods imported to the
West Bank from Jordan are sub-
ject to normal Israeli customs
charges at the Jordan River cross-

ings.
