Parley on Federal Aid
to Education Set in N.Y.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

WASHINGTON (JTA) - Plans
for a conference here of officials
of public and non-public schools to
determine the degree of coopera-
tion between the two forms of edu-
cation stimulated by federal aid
to education were anounced by
Harold Howe, federal commis-
sioner of education, at the week-
end 19th annual convention of the
National Association of Hebrew
Day School PTAs.

Howe told the 400 delegates,
representing Orthodox - sponsored
Hebrew day schools in 30 states
and five Canadian provinces, that
he was planning such a conference
because he felt there was not
enough communication between the
two sectors. The commissioner also
told the delegates that creation
of day schools was "an expression
of freedom which we must cher-
ish" and urged the Hebrew day
schools, like all other private
schools, to make a qualitative im-
pact on the public school system
by continuing their role as "a
major source of educational stim-
ulation to the public school sys
tem" and by use of their private
status to innovate educational
methods and experiments.

Rabbi Joseph Grunblatt of New
York City, an adviser to Jewish
college students, denounced the
"de - escalation" of moral and
sexual values in the American so-
ciety and said the Hebrew day
school was the only educational
medium which could offset the
dangers to Jewish survival in an
open, socially fluid society.

Nursing Home to Have
Wing for Kosher Food

GROSSINGERS. N.Y. (JTA) -
A $3,000,000, 100-bed county nurs-

ing home will have a special 25-bed
wing to serve Jewish patients
kosher food, the Sullivan County
Social S e r vice Commissioner,
Robert Travis, said.
He said the separate wing, with
its separate kitchens for kosher
food preparation, would be the first
of its kind in any such non-urban
public nursing home in the nation.
He said that assistance in plan-
ning the special facility had been
provided by Mrs. Jennie Gros-
singer, owner of Grossingers Hotel,
and Abe Friedman. hotel dining
room manager, who both will be
consultants for the facility. Until
now, such dietary needs of exist-
ing nursing home facilities in Sul-
livan County have been provided
mainly through donations from the
kosher kitchens of the Grossinger
Hotel.
Travis, who also is national
chairman of the Council of Welfare
Directors, said he intended to ap-
proach other social service district
officials throughout the country to
recommend similar facilities for
Jewish patients.

B-G Advises Eban to Halt
His Attack on deGaulle

SDE BORER (ZINS) - Follow-
ing the funeral service for Paula
Ben-Gurion, among the wired ex-
pressions of sorrow from all over
the world, there was one from the
president of France. Cabinet min-
ister Joseph Burg read it aloud:
"It is with sorrow that I heard of
the passing of Madame Ben-Gurion.
In this hour of grief, I wish to
express my profound sympathy.
Charles de Gaulle."
Ben-Gurion addressed himself to
Zalman Aranne, minister of edu-
cation. in these words: "Tell the
foreign minister (Abba Eban and
Levi Eshkol did not attend the
funeral) he should stop defaming
do Gaulle. He may abuse me as
much as he likes, but he should
treat de Gaulle in the spirit of
Tashkent." The reference was to
the time prior the June War, when
Abba Eban believed that the way
the Soviet Union had mediated the
conflict between India and Pakis-
tan in Tashkent, it would apply
the same conciliatory spirit in its
relations with Israel.
