Reader Makes Charge Editor, The Jewish News: The present law in Israel allows autopsies to be preformed on all patients without the consent of the deceased or his family. I refer to the JTA dispatch of Feb. 4-7 where this is stated explicitly. There are many people who refrain from en- tering a hospital although they are in critical condition and much in need of hospitalization out of fear of being dissected after death. According to the Hebrew Ency- clopedia (1966 edition) in the sup- plement to volumes 1-16 page 432: "The autopsy rate in Israel is in excess to 50 per cent and as high as 80 per cent of patients dying in hospitals." In the U.S. according to a letter from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, dated, Washington, Jan. 13, 1967, the total autopsy rate in the U.S. is 19.1 per cent. Certainly, in the name of human decency, we should not let this un- democratic practice take place in our State of Israel which is found- ed on the principles of democracy. I urge- all readers to investigate into this matter and help remove this mo-al indecency by doing what we can to allow autopsies only with consent of the deceased or his 'am- ity as is the law in other democrat- ic countries. DAVID CARMEN 18500 Indiana • Program Director Defends Toronto 'Y' Opening Editor, The Jewish News: I have just had occasion to read in the Detroit Jewish News of Feb. 16 an article regarding the open- ing of the Toronto YM and YWHA on Saturdays. The program has now been in operation for three weeks, serving children from 6 to 11 years on Saturday afternoons. It can best be described as a Sabbath Day Camp, and reflects the desire of the di- rectors of the Y to provide a rec- reational and cultural program for members in an exclusive chil- d r en's environment. The Y is closed to all but to the children registered for the program, for whom it is open 2-5 p.m. The pro- gram thus far has featured an oneg Shabat, with children's clubs involved in presentations on the theme "S a bb a t h Around the World," a film showing of "The Six-Day War" with speakers, and a Jewish story hour, in addition to restricted recreational activi- ties. The response to the program on the part of members has been overwhelming, resulting in our closing the waiting list after 600 children had been registered. As of this date the Y has re- ceived but one resignation, and has actually gained in excess of 50 new members whose families wished to see them enroll. This is in di- rect contradiction to the state- ments made by Rabbi (Moses) Burak, who stated that many of the Orthodox members of the "Y" were turning in their member- ship cards in protest. It is inter- esting to note that even the rabbi, himself, has not done so. Sincerely, MARTIN PARK, MSW Program Director Toronto YM-YWHA Slomovitz Scholarship Application Deadline Set Rabbi Milton Arm, chairman of the Philip Slomovitz Scholarship Fund, announces the deadline for applications for scholarships has been set for March 15.
