Eshkol Maps Role
of Jewish Press at
Journalist Parley

JERUSALEM (JTA) - Prime

Minister Levi Eshkol, in an ad-
dress at the opening of the world
conference of Jewish journalists
here, told the 75 delegates from 13
countries why he believed the
Jewish press is a vital instrument
of information and education and
what he thought its functions
should be with respect to Israel
and the Jewish communities of
the diaspora.
Eshkol also told his audience
that there is little prospect of
peace in the Middle East as long
as the Arabs remain enslaved by
their negative attitudes and refuse
to recognize reality. He specifical-
ly warned Jordan to desist from
her current assaults along the
Israel-Jordan cease-fire line.

The prime minister stressed
that the Jewish press, in no mat-
ter which language it is pub-
lished, is the only medium
common to Jews in all countries.
It has a function of prime im-
portance to perform in preserv-
ing the bonds and creating a
common spiritual atmosphere for
Jewry the world over, be said.

He then suggested several tasks
for the Jewish press "to help
Israel in her fight for peace."
24 HOUR SERVICE CALL
"First," he said, "it can help Jews
understand the true situation here
and the reasons there is no peace.
It should explain over and over
again the basic truth of Israel's
h i s tor i c rights to this land. It
should participate in the struggle

Notables Mourn Death
of Davar's Editor

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

TEL AVIV-President Shazar led
a group of cabinet ministers, labor
leaders and journalists here Wed-
nesday at funeral services for
Chaim Shurer, retired editor of the
daily newspaper Davar, who died
Tuesday at age 73.
Mr. Shurer was interred in the
Kiryat Shaul Cemetery near Tel
Aviv.
Davar is the organ of Histadrut,
the Israel Federation of Labor. Mr.
Shurer joined the staff of the He-
brew-language daily in 1935 and
became its editor in 1953.
A native of the Ukraine, Shurer
was educated in Kishinev and came
to Palestine in 1913 at age' 18. In
Palestine he worked as an agricul-
tural laborer in various parts of
the country until 1926. He was the
author of a number of books and
of an exhaustive study of the
Hapoel Hatzair movement. A dele-
gate to several sessions of t h e
World Zionist Congress, he was a
member of the Zionist General
Council.

Harman Urges Support
of Olam Hadash, Hebrew
Publication for Children

NEW YORK-Olam Hadash. the
national Hebrew illustrated publi-
cation for children and youth, was
hailed by Avraham Harman, re-
tiring Israel ambassador to the
United States, "as a very fine,
well edited publication that de-
serves the wholehearted support of
the American Jewish community."
Ambassador Harman spoke at an
intimate farewell meeting of Jew-
ish leaders sponsored by the Jew-
ish Agency-American Section and
the American Zionist Council.
"The 'Olam Hadash,' " Ambas-
sador Harman said, "serves Jewish
youth in over 300 American com-
munities. Why it has financial
difficulties is hard for me to ac-
cept. I can't understand how a
community that generously raises
millions for the United J e wish
Appeal cannot supply the minimal
funds necessary for the expansion
of such worthwhile projects as

'Olam Hadash.' "
