Editorial:

Significance of Israel's 20th Anniversary Year

A major factor in the vitally needed strength
for the preservation of the partnership between
Israel and the United States is the retention of
intimacy, the extension of the deep and genuine
interest in what is transpiring in the Holy Land
and how the peace of the Mediterranean area can
be assured and perpetuated.
Naturally, the Jews of America must provide
leadership in the retention of that great coopera-
tive spirit between the two peoples, and one of
the chief means of guaranteeing the friendships
and the sense of cooperation is by the closest ex-
change of mutual interests.
Tourism is not only a means of assuring un-
derstanding through acquisition of knowledge
about friendly natioos: it also is the way of ex-
tending the avenues of exchange of commerce and
of learning one from another.
The 20th anniversary of Israel's rebirth, soon
to be observed by the Jewries of Israel and the
entire world, will, hopefully, be marked by an in-
crease in tourism, by a growth in the number of
Americans who will visit the ancient Land of Israel
and become intimately acquainted with it, its peo-
ple, its traditions.
The importance of Israel's 20th anniversary,
linking it with Israel's kinsmen everywhere, was
outlined in the proclamation that was issued by
President Zalman Shazar of Israel. It declares:

By authority of the Government of Israel, the
Knesset and the Chief Rabbinate in the Land and
of the Zionist Organization throughout the world,
here in the House of the President in reunified
Jerusalem, the Holy and Kingly City, it is my great
privilege to inaugurate the celebrations marking
the twentieth year of the renewed sovereignty of
the State of Israel.
May the year now opening auspiciously before
us, the year 5728, in the calendar of our people,
be consecrated both in the Land and in the en-tire
Diaspora, to deepening, solidifying, enriching the
living relationship between the people of Israel,
wherever it is dispersed, and its eternal Father-
land which two decades ago became free and in-
dependent once again.
Having risen to such exalted heights in the
great and heroic days of the past year; being con-
fronted with such historic tasks in the year to
come our people is all the more prepared to cele-
brate the completion of Israel's second decade with
the elevation of spirit, the heartfelt thanksgiving,
the far-reaching constructive activity befitting such
grave times and such high hopes. Let us revive this
year the ancient custom of pilgrimage to Jerusa-
lem, city of our glory, and to all our Holy Land
pilgrimage from all Jewry's communities in the
world, following in the footsteps of those of our
brothers and sisters who have streamed here in
great numbers during this Festival of Succot.

Let this year, this festive year, be the time of
realization for every one of our people who has
determined to settle in the Land; for every one
who plans to give of his means and strength to
its rebuilding. And those who are not ready or able
to do so, let them and their households come this
year to w it n e s s the wonders that have been
wrought in this Land of our fathers and our future.
And thus it will become clear to all the nations of
the world that the relationship of our people to its
Land is no matter of lip-service but a living and
everlasting love: that the soul of our people is
bound up forever with this Land, now, as in the
days of old, and forever.

As in the first days of the return to Zion from
Babylonian exile, let the great and heartening call
ring out in all the countries of our dispersion:
"Whoever there is among you of all His people—
the Lord his God be with him—let him go up!"

Israel has much to teach its visitors. The ins-
pirations that stem from ancient phophecies are in
evidence again. For world Jewry Israel is an inspi-
ration that leads to the continuation of Jewish
ideals which endlessly link our generation with the
past. For peoples of all other faiths the Holy Land
which is Israel serves to strengthen confidence in
the greater power of good will over the challeng-
ing threats that have turned many parts of the
world into battlefields.
