Good Crops in Negev
Seen in Near Future

LONDON—Nobel Laureate E. B.
Chain, the co-discoverer of penicil-
lin, predicted here Tuesday night
that Israel's semiarid Negev region
would yield very good crops in a
day "not very far off when gen-
eral cultivation of the whole Negev
will become a working proposi-
tion."
Prof. Chain made his comment
after viewing a film on the experi-
mental farm operated in the Negev
by Prof. Michael Evnari, head of
the botany department at the He-
brew University in Jerusalem. The
film, screened here for a group
of scientists and agriculturalists
showed how Prof. Evnari and his
team rediscovered 2,000-year-old
techniques of irrigation and plant
cultivation in the Negev and adapt-
ed them to modern needs.
Prof. Chain said the Negev,
which comprises two-thirds of Is-
rael's territory, could be made to
bloom once cheap water became
