It's time for persons seeking a
property tax reduction under Mich-
igan's Senior Citizen Homestead
Tax Exemption Law to apply at
their local assessor's office.
Last year this law meant an
average saving per senior citizen U
of $95.88. The state spent $16,000,-
000 reimbursing local units of
government for the tax loss.
All eligible Michigan homeown-
ers who are 65 years of age and
over will need to file an affidavit
for a tax reduction for their 1968
taxes. Those who applied last year
must file again.
Applicants may file until some
time in March, a date set by each U
local assessor's office. There are
no lien provisions attached to the
Homestead Tax Exemption Act,
and there will be no attempt by
state or local governments to col- U
lect from the heirs or otherwise
attach the property.
Michigan residents of more than U
five years, aged 65 or over, are
eligible for the exemption if their
homestead and real property tax
value does not exceed $20,000, and
their gross income does not top U
$5,000.

Among the changes in the social
security program recently signed
into law by President Johnson are
a number of special significance to
women. Chief among them is a
change that will make about 175,-
000 children eligible for monthly int
payments, according to Sam F.
Test, district manager of the Social
Security Administration. Until now
for a child to be considered de- la
pendent upon his mother and there-
fore eligible for monthly payments X
when she died, retired, or became 1.r
disabled, she needed to have
worked under social security for at
least 18 months out of the last X
three years, unless she was actu-
ally supporting the child.
The amendments eliminate this
recent - work requirement. Begin-
ning with checks in March 1968,
benefits are payable to the child
of a woman worker who has died,
retired, or become entitled to
social security disability benefits
