Adolph Deutsch's Memory Honored; Record of Achievements Acclaimed Adolph Deutsch, founder and chairman of the board of Ameri- can Savings and Loan Association and for several decades one of De- troit's distinguished citizens, died last Saturday at the age of 86. Funeral services were held Mon- day noon at the Bnai Moshe Syna- gogue, which the deceased served as president, and the tribute by Rabbi Moses Lehrman echoed the tributes to his memory that LATE ADOLPH DEUTSCH are pouring in from scores of in- dividuals and community groups. The synagogue's sanctuary was filled to capacity. The El Mole was recited by Cantor Louis Klein. A self-made man in the true Horatio Alger tradition, Adolph Deutsch left as his memorial a praiseworthy record of achieve- ments in his personal, religious and business life when he passed away. just a few months after his 86th birthday. Highlight of his last year was the celebration of the 20th anni- ' versary of American Savings and Loan Association, which he found- ed at an age when most men are thinking of retirement. The asso- ciation, culmination of a life of fruitful business activity, grew under the leadership of Adolph Deutsch and his sons, Alfred and Charles, into a 5191.000.000 con- cern. This time. however, as some put it. Dr. Goldmann is really planning to resign because of his failure to effect a change in the structure of the World Zionist OrgLnization, and to draw a substantial following to the movement. The same sources concede that there has been little harmony be- i tween him and the agency leader- ship. It is rumored in the Zionist Actions Committee that the coming congress might not elect a presi- dent, but only a chairman of the executive. Two years later he and his brother, the late Anthony Deutsch, opened their own steam- ship ticket office. Though his first business venture was a success, Deutsch looked for new fields to conquer, and found them in the banking business. He allied himself with the Newcastle Bank in Pennsylvania. There, as head of the foreign desk, he soon found himself occupied not only with the banking business of the city's foreign born, but with their legal and personal problems as well.
