(Continued from Page One) ring action on the P-4 Phantom jet fighter-bombers sought by Israel to maintain a deterrent force. The committee charged that the President asked as his "price" that Prime Minister Levi Eshkol of Israel help persuade American Jewish leaders to sup- port the President's Vietnam policies and his re-election bid. An editorial in the Republican newsletter asked: "What was LBJ's price for 50 Phantom jets? Not only. Eshkol's support of the President's Vietnam policy but the prime minister's pledge to use his influence to help win votes among Jews in the country for LBJ's re-election bid. The jets, Johnson, in effect, told Eshkol, would be forthcoming after the election this fall." White House spokesman George Christian, rejected the charges of pressure on Eshkol. Christian told the JTA: "Yesterday I called it ridiculous. Today I will call it buncombe." Citing a report in Newsweek, the newsletter asserted that Eshkol was "pressured" into acceptance of this arrangement and later ask- ed a closing meeting of Jewish leaders in New York to support Johnson. "Either the decision to make Phantom jets available to Israel is sound or it is not," the Repub- licans asserted. "If it is, the planes should be made available now— not after the election. We believe the decision is sound. And we be- lieve Mr. Politics' blatant efforts to put Israel and her prime minis- ter on the spot will be resented by Americans generally, but particu- larly by our citizens of Jewish faith who will recognize that the voice is the voice of Jacob but the hand is the hand of Esau." The editorial noted that "by the best intelligence estimates, includ- ing U.S. military leaders, NATO experts and others, the Russians are embarked on a massive mili- tary and naval buildup in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Israel needs new weapons, parti- cularly U.S. Phantom jets, to meet the challenge posed by the Soviet presence there and by the Soviet MIGs supplied to the Arab na- tions." Nevertheless, they recognize cer- tain achievements. One is that Eshkol succeeded in obtaining an American identifica- tion with the security of Israel. Also he re-established personal contact with President Johnson; healed the rift resulting from Is- rael's failure to apprise the United States of the impending war and demonstrated to the Arabs and the Soviet Union that Israel is not isolated. The correspondent further re- ports that in the friendly conversa- tions, President Johnson clearly emphasized that America does not recognize the occupied territories as being part of Israel, although Israel is entitled to "certain" border readjustments—a contention which has been confirmed by U.S. News and World Report. According to its story, Johnson told Eshkol that Israel will have to make a "symbolic" withdrawal from the Suez Canal as the first tangible step toward Israeli-Arab peace. It also notes that Israel received similar advice from other world leaders. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 26, 1968-3 LONDON (JTA) — Mrs. Fran- coise Jordan, ex-wife of British Nazi party leader Colin Jordan, was sentenced to 18 months im- prisonment Jan. 17 after a jury in Old Bailey Court found her guilty of conspiring to set fire to a London synagogue that burned in 1965. After the judge pronounced sen- tence, the French-born Mrs. Jor- dan faced the jury, gave the Nazi salute and shouted "Heil Hitler." The jury, which had beep warned by Judge Cusack not to convict Mrs. Jordan "because you dislike her opinions," was unable to reach a verdict on another charge of conspiring to set fire to a synagogue at Stanmore, Mid- dlesex. On the instructions of the judge, Mrs. Jordan was acquitted of a third charge of inciting mem- bers of the British Nazi Party to burn synagogues. During the trial Mrs. Jordan declared that Hitler was her "eternal leader" and that she despised •the "Jewish race" be- cause they are "evil." KAPLAN BROS. Isn't it time YOU wore a watchband? Evaluate Eshkol's Visit WASHINGTON (ZINS) — The Washington correspondent of Ha- aretz who had accompanied the Israeli premier on his trip to Texas, writes that informed Is- highest rate in Michigan `SNCC Cooled Jewish Support of Civil Rights' WASHINGTON (JTA) — Jewish resolve on civil rights issues has been "mitigated" by the activities of extremist factions in the Negro community, Rabbi Jay Kaufman, executive vice president of Bnai Brith, said at a reception given by the order in honor of Mayor Walter E. Washington and other members of the District of Columbia admin- istration. Mayor Washington is a Negro. "The anti-Israel position taken by SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and by the New Left conference in Chic- ago last year has created confu- sion in the minds of Jews who had supported the goals of the Negro revolution." Rabbi Kauf- man said. "I think that Jews were singularly free of the corrosion of the white backlash until then," he said, "but they are no longer and must be brought back to their former resolve and fervor." Mayor Washington told the 200 guests at the reception that he ac- cepted Rabbi Kaufman's challenge and called for a coalition of busi- ness, religious and civic leaders of the district "to help bring about the kind of town where we can live in peace and dignity." He warned, however, that "if we develop the attitudes of negativism and defeatism, we may as well not make the effort." No double talk about rates.
