NEW YORK—The Joint Distri-
bution Committee will provide $2,-
250,000 during 1968 toward the
overseas vocational training pro-
gram of ORT, the Organization for
Rehabilitation through Training, it
was announced by officials of both
organizations.
This is $150,000 more than the
amount allocated in 1967, reflect-
ing the increased need for voca-
tional training among Jewish youth
and unskilled adults overseas, es-
pecially in Israel.
The grant will help finance tech-
nical education and economic re-
habilitation services of ORT in
Europe, Israel, North Africa, Iran
and India. Approximately 50,000
persons are expected to receive
such assistance in these and other
areas during the coming year.
ORT activities in Israel, with
trade schools in 38 cities and
towns, comprising the largest voca-
tional school system in the coun-
try, will receive by far the largest
portion of the 1968 JDC grant.
About 30,000 persons are expected
to receive industrial and technical
instruction in these schools during
1968.

State Dept. Condemns
Israel Housing Action

WASHINGTON (JTA)— The U.S.
Department of State officially con-
demned the action by the Israel
government involving designation
of land in the Mt. Scopus and
Sheikh Jarrah area of Jerusalem
for a new housing development.
State Department spokesman Rob-
' ert McCloskey stated: "We have
repeatedly made it clear that we
do not recognize any unilateral ac-
tions affecting the status of Jeru-
salem."
The spokesman said: "This re-
mains our policy. Furthermore, we
believe the status of Jerusalem
must necessarily be considered in
the context of a settlement of all
problems arising out of the recent
conflict."
State Department sources said
later that this prepared statement
had been cleared with the White
House, and fully reflected the
thinking of President Johnson.
The statement was termed a re-
iteration of previous expressions
by the State Department on the
incorporation of the Old City as
part of Jerusalem.
