Postmaster's Gratitude

Editor, The Jewish News
On behalf of the 9,600 employees
of the Detroit Post Office and my-
self, I would like to express heart-
felt thanks to you and your paper,
to your readers, and to the De-
troit public, in general, for the
fine cooperation we received from
all of you during the past holiday
period.
We enjoyed another smooth and
successful holiday postal operation,
but we know without your help
we could never have handled the
more than 300,000,000 pieces of
mail we did without any serious
problems or backlogs.
Early mailing and the extensive
use of ZIP Code by Detroiters
helped tremendously in providing
an even flow of mail through our
office, and in permitting a more
expeditious handling of it.
Again, many thanks for the gen-
erous helping hand and from all
of us here at the post office best
wishes for a bright and prosperous
New Year.
Gratefully
E. L. BAKER

Mizrachi Founder Harry Lifshitz, 80;
His Remains Sent to Israel for Burial

Harry Lifshitz, of 13510 Rose-
mary, Oak Park, an outstanding
leader in the Detroit Orthodox
Jewish community, died Monday.
He was approaching his 80th birth-
day. He was a retired plumber.

Hyman Witty, 75;
Hebrew Scholar

Hyman Witty of New York, a
Hebrew scholar and teacher for
more than 50 years, who operated
briefly a school for underprivileged
children in Detroit, died Jan. 1 at
age 75.
Mr. Witty, was the father of Mrs.
Charles (Rhoda) Lampert of $outh-
field.
Until his retirement 10 years
ago, Mr. Witty had taught in Pas-
saic, N.J., for almost half a cen-
tury. Prior to this post, he intro-
duced modern teaching methods—
including conversational Hebrew
with the "new" Sephardic accents
—into the Hebrew curriculum in
Massachusetts.
Following his retirement, Mr.
Witty came to Detroit where he
set up a Hebrew school for
youngsters who could not afford
to meet tuition fees of regular
Hebrew schools. The school dis-
banded when he left Detroit to
return to New York.
The author of many treatises on
Jewish history and grammar, Mr.
Witty was considered an authority
in the latter field. He came from a
long line of rabbis and scholars;
his late brother Noah was a cantor,
and among his nephews is the well-
known Winnipeg rabbi, Itzhak
Witty. Born in the Ukraine, Mr.
Witty lived in the U.S. since 1910.
Surviving are his wife, Asya; a
son, Emanuel of Pittsburgh; his
daughter, Rhoda; a brother, Binim
of Buenos Aires; and seven grand-
children. Interment New Jersey.

Funeral services were held Tues-
day at the Hebrew Memorial Cha-
pel and his remains were sent to
Israel for burial, at the specific
request he had made before his
death.
Surviving are his wife, Bess; a
sister in Moscow, cousins and
nephews.
A founder of the Detroit Chapter
of Mizrachi, he was active in the
movement during the entire four
decades of his residence here.
Before his death he made pro-
visions for the establishment of a
Nahla settlement in his name in
Israel through the Jewish National
Fund in which he had been espe-
cially active, both here and in his
native Brest Litovsk.
He had taken a deep interest in
Yeshivath Beth Yehuda and was an
ardent supporter of traditional in-
stitutions here and in Israel.
