18—Friday, January 12, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Judge Milliner Reaffirms Early San pport of Genocide Convention Former Judge Charles Ruhiner, in a statement made by him this week to The Jewish News, reaf- firmed the position he and many lawyers took in support of the UN Genocide Convention which thus far has failed to get American support. Commenting on The Jewish News editorial in which the statement of James N. Rosenberg was quoted in criticism of the stand taken by the American Bar Association, Judge Ruhiner pointed out that he had supported the Genocide Con- vention when he was president of the Detroit Bar Association. In his statement, Judge Ruhiner declared: "Your editorial 'Genocide: Ba- sic Principle Abandoned by Senate,' in the issue of Dec. 29, focuses attention again on the discouraging frustration which has been suffered by all persons concerned with the preservation of the most elementary of all rights—the right to live. "Seventy nations — many of them not distinguished for their recognition of democratic prin- ciples or themselves famous for their zealous protection of civil liberties — have deemed it just that the United Nations Geno- cide Convention be affirmed and ratified by them; not, however, the United Nations. Private Stock Bourbon, Five O'Clock Vodka and Gin — have shown tremendous sales increases in Control States. "Right now." Sharako said, "I'm particularly excited about two G&W brands . . Lauder's Scotch and Canadian Rich & Rare. We call Lauder's UNSTOPPABLE .. . and it truly is. With its 34 year old name, its full 86 proof, and its new reduced price. Lauder's is setting sales records all over the country. And it looks like we'll have an- other record setter, too. Canadian Rich & Rare, just introduced into the United States, is moving up fast . . and we foresee a great future for it." Sharako was born in Chicago. but moved to Michigan at an early age. He, his • wife and four chil- dren reside in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. An ANT IS NOT A RELATIVE! Call TE 3-3697 "It is particularly baffling to follow the distorted reasoning of the American Bar Association that the protection of rights 'basically . . . relates to internal affairs and not to international matters.' The eminent Mr. James N. Rosenberg, a pillar of the bar in his time and a distinguished figure in many other fields, is on completely solid ground in tak- ing the association to task for its myopic outlook. "The image of the American Bar Association as a conserva- tive—if not reactionary—body is not helped by its attitude toward the Genocide Convention. Many lawyers have indicated their re- sentment by refusing to affiliate with the Association. Included is the writer who so abstained even during his term as presi- dentof the Detroit Bar Associa- tion." The Jewish News Dec, 29 edi- torial was inspired by a declara- tion by President .Johnson express- ing a positive view on the UN Genocide Convention. A national campaign urging the U.S. Senate's Concurrence with the principle is now in progress.
