'Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry'
Paperbacked, Is a Sure Best Seller
When Harry Kemelman, who is
not a rabbi but has a good Jewish
background, produced his "Friday
the Rabbi Slept Late," the fascin-
ating story caught the imagination
of readers. It became a best seller.
The paperback that was issued by
Fawcett World Library (67 W.
44th, NY36) also became a best
seller.
Then came Kemelman's "Sat-
urday the Rabbi Went Hungry."
again it was a best seller. Again
the Fawcett paperback, just issued,
gives promise of becoming equally
as popular as the predecessor.
The reason Is obvious. In each
instance the book is a mystery.
Each book is a murder story. Both
involve a rabbi and the Jewish
community and in both there are
references to Jewish law, to tradi-
tions that provide the rabbi with
good sense.
There is lots of pilpul—rabbinic
disputation. Thoroughly rational,
based on excellent resort to tal-
mudic reasoning, replete with
proper challenge to the Jewish
ideas presented by a rabbi who is
calm even in face of attack, who
Zionist Leaders to Meet
on Movement's Structure
•
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A con-
ference of Zionist leaders from
Israel and abroad will be held
here at the end of February to
discuss proposals adopted at the
plenary session of the Jewish
Agency executive, which ended
Sunday, regarding t h e future
structure and program of the
World Zionist movement.
Those proposals call for an ex-
panded Jewish Agency which will
enlist the support of all sections of
the Jewish people on behalf of
Israel, and for the creation at the
same time of an elite group within
the movement, made up of Zionists
personally committed to aliya —
immigration—to Israel.
Aryeh Pincus, chairman of the
Jewish Agency executive, summed
up the plenum proceedings by ob-
serving that there is no contra-
diction between working f o r
aliya on the one hand and foster.
ing Jewish education in the Dias-
pora. The Zionist movement, he
said, "must not be restricted to
the exclusive few who are willing
to undertake the personal obliga-
tion of aliya. It is still the only
organization capable of serving as
a bridge between Israel and the
Diaspora."
The "exclusive few," however,
will be accorded "preferred sta-
tus" under the new proposals,
which call for the establishment
of a "personal" or "practicing"
Zionist movement. The February
meeting will lie attended by 30
Zionist leaders from abroad, and
15 to 20 Israelis. It will last three
days.
comes out of his difficulties with

story emerges as one of the finest
literary creations of the year as
an outstanding love story as well.
"Saturday the Rabbi Went Hun-
gry" is so wholesome, so entertain-
ing, that the paperback is certain
to be gobbled up as quickly as was
the hard cover book. Here we have
another certain best seller in the
paperback ranks.
Egypt May Free Ships
Moored in Suez Canal
LONDON (JTA)—The release of
15 merchant ships of various na-
tionalities which have been idly
riding at anchor in the Great
Bitter Lake section of the Suez Ca-
nal, since the canal was shut
down by Egypt during the Six-
Day War last June, appears likely
soon, according to reports from
various quarters.
Informed sources said that the
United Nations special peace en-
voy to the Middle East. Ambassa-
dor Gunnar J a r r i n g, has ap-
proached both Egyptian and Is-
raeli authorities with a request to
permit the ships to leave.
Egypt has insisted up to now
that no part of the Suez Canal
could be cleared until Israeli
troops withdraw from its East
bank and from all other territor-
ies occupied in the war. Now the
semi-official Cairo newspaper, Al
Ahram says the Egyptian govern-
ment is "careful)/ studying" the
matter, and that there was a
distinct possibility that the ships
would be released.
Under the terms of last June's
cease-fire agreement, neither Is-
rael nor Egypt was to navigate the
Canal. But it was indicated in
Jerusalem that Israel would raise
no objections to the extrication of
the vessels provided that the Egyp-
tian tugs and personnel employed
confine themselves to that opera-
tion which must not be construed
as a precedent affecting the status
of the Canal.
(A report in Washington quoted
an official Egyptian spokesman,
Dr. Mohammed Hassan El Zayyat,
as saying in Cairo that the 15
stranded ships may soon be re-
leased but that the Canal will re-
main closed until Israel evacuates
all of her troops from Sinai.)
Question: I am over age 26. Re-
cently I was declared a delinquent
and ordered to report for induc-
tion. If the induction ages are
18% to 26, how can I be included?
Answer: Registrants deferred on
or after June 19, 1951, are liable
for training and service until age
35. Additionally, any person who
has failed or refused to report for
induction remains liable for induc-
tion and, when available, shall be
immediately inducted, regardless
of age,.
