Friday, December 29, 1967-39 Rabbis and laymen (Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Detroit), disci- ples and associates of the late Rabbi Joseph Rabinowitz, gathered Sunday evening at the Julius Roten- berg Building to pay respects to his memory. Rabbi Rabinowitz died two weeks ago in Givataim, Israel, where he had transplanted Cong. Beth Shmuel, of which be was spiritual head during its 40 years' tenure in Detroit. Rabbi Meyer Moskowitz, son-in- law of Rabbi Rabinowitz, came from New York to participate in the "hesped." He related that, while still on the boat to Israel, the Six-Day War broke out. Rabbi Rabinowitz was reached by phone in Athens and urged to return, but he would not hear of it. Arriving in Israel, he plunged into the work of leading the newly created syna- gogue. One of his last acts was to place a "quite" in the Western Wall, in which he formulated a prayer for the welfare of the De- troit Jewish community. Rabbi Chaskel Grubner, execu- tive director of the council, re- ferred to the background of Rabbi Rabinowitz, scion of a distinguished rabbinical family of Russian leaders in Hasidism who established a large following there. He emi- grated to this country 41 years ago, the youthful heir of the line of Hasidic rabbis, the Brezner Rebe. Here he raised his family, who now survive him: his wife, Sima, sons Rabbi Philip of Chicago and Rabbi Motel of New York; and a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Mos- kowitz, wife of Rabbi Meyer Mos- kowitz. The rebitzin is still in Israel, but the oldest son was able to reach his father's bedside. Other participants in the rites were Rabbi Leizer Levin, presi- dent of the council; Rabbi Sho- lom P. Wohlgelernter, who urged that a tangible memorial be established; and Isidore Rosen- berg, associated with the late rabbi for over 30 years as presi- dent of Cong. Beth Shmuel in Detroit. Rabbi Moskowitz chanted the tra- ditional El Mole Rahamim. Those wishing to send condol- ences may address them to 44 Rabbi Herzog Street, Givataim, Israel.
