OBITUARIES

Goodman Rycus, 87, Pioneer Zionist

Goodman Rycus, a pioneer De-
troit Zionist, died Tuesday. He
would have been 88 in January.
He was a resident of the Jewish
Home for Aged.
Surviving are two sons, Louis
and Jacob, academic secretary
of the Weizmann
Institute in. Reho-

Esther Buchhalter, 83

Esther Buchhalter, a member of
the prominent Buchhalter family
and sister of Mrs. Dora Ehrlich,
died Dec. 16 at age 83.
Born in Alpena, Mrs. Buchhalter
lived most of her life in Detroit.
She was a member of Hadassab
and Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Surviving besides her sister Dora
are three other sisters, Sarah, Mrs.
Ida B. Colton and Mrs. Moses F
(Tena) Lipton.

While in Canada, he organized and
was among the leaders of Zionist
groups.
He came to Detroit in 1924 and
immediately became active in the
local Zionist Organization, partici-
pating in many of its efforts. He
was active in 1947 in the Zionist
Expansion Fund.
Mr. Rycus retired from the prod-
uce business in 1950. He was a
charter member of Temple Israel
and for 35 years a member of Per-
fection Lodge F&AM.

Jack Israel, 40;
Was Active in
Local Groups

Jack Israel, co-partner in the
firm of Buddy Plumbing and Heat-
ing, 10831 Capitol, Oak Park, died
Wednesday at age 40.
Mr. Israel had been active in
many local Jewish organizations,
including the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, of which he had just been
appointed chairman of the me-
chanical trades division.
A native of Detroit, he resided
at 17135 Westland, Southfield. He
was a member of Adas Shalom
Synagogue, Perfection Lodge F &
AM, Detroit Consistory and Mos-
lem Temple, Crescent Shrine Club,
Morgenthau Lodge of Bnai Brith,
Tam O'Shanter Country Club, City
of Hope, Zionist Organization of
Detroit and the Plumbing and
Heating Contractors Association, of
which he was a former trustee. He
also was an active supporter of
Hillel Day School.
SUrviving are his wife. Carole;
a son. Michael; three daughters.
Linda. Debra and Julie; and a
brother, Harold.

Bud Bielfield, 50

Leonard I. (Bud) Bielfield, vice
president and co-owner with his
brother of the Jerry Bielfield Ford
agency, 8333 Michigan, died Mon-
day. He was 50.

Israel Cohen, Father
of Federation Executive

Israel Cohen (father of Samuel
Cohen, associate director of the
Jewish Welfare Federation of De-
troit, died Dec. 15 in Miami at age
78.
Mr. Cohen was born in Russia
and came to this country at an
early age. He resided in Baltimore
until 20 years ago when he retired
and moved to Florida. He was a
member of Temple Beth El in Mi-
ami.
He is also survived by his wife,
Ethel; a daughter, Mrs. Goldie Ber-
berman; and five grandchildren.

British-Jewish Doctor

LONDON (JTA) - Sir Adolphe
Abrahams, profninent British Jew-
ish physician and honorary medi-
cal adviser to the International
Athletic Board and the British
Olympic team, died here at age
84.
Sir Adolphe was president of the
British Association of Sports and
Medicine.

19. She leaves a son, Harold; four
daughters, Mrs. Ephraim (Jean)
Ralph of Santa Monica, Mrs. Mau-
rice (Goldie) Werner of Napa,

nenhouse and Mrs. Irving (Rose)
Levine; 12 grandchildren and
