Offer Retarded Youth
New School Program

NEW YORK-A radically differ-
ent and comprehensive curriculum
that would change the way mental-
ly retarded children and youth are
educated, developed by Yeshiva
University and the New York State
education department under a U.S.
Office of Education grant, will be
tested in 12 states including Mich-
igan starting in January, it was
announced.
Stressing "social learning," the
curriculum is designed to prepare
a mentally retarded person to deal
with problems he will confront in
practical life as an adult.
Most current curricula for the
mentally retarded are similar to
those used in regular classes of in-
tellectually normal children, albeit
taught at a slower pace and in a!
simpler form.
The program was designed to •
help the retarded "get along
with other people, understand
their responsibilities as potential
parents and employes, and ap-
preciate just what the society
they live in expects of its cit-
izens."
In the new curriculum, reading
and arithmetic are taught as
"means to an end, as problem-solv-
ing tools in the learning and inte-
gration of social learning factors
designed to minimize the probabil-
ity that the adult retardate would
fail for reasons of blhavior in
meeting his responsibilities at
home, at work, and in the com-
munity."
The field tests are a phase of a
comprehensive five-year project
that was launched last year and
will extend through June 1971.
Other aspects include research into
the nature and structure of a re-
tarded child's family, parental and
societal attitudes towards the edu-
cable retarded and the kind of
social knowledge a school-age re-
tarded child. has .obtained or needs
to obtain.
