Traditional
Benediction

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1967, JTA Inc.)

The traditional Jewish benedic-
tion begins by speaking to the
Almighty addressing Him in the
second person, and then switches
to the third person form of expres-
sion (i.e. "Blessed art Thou —
who —")
This pattern is not one which
was universally agreed upon ori-
ginally. There was one opinion
(that of the 'Amora Samuel) who
claimed that in a benediction one
did not address the Almighty in the
second nerson at all. According to
this option a benediction simply
stated "Blessed be the Almighty
who ...". The opinion that was offi-
cially accented as binding was that
of Ray (Yerushalmy-Berakoth 9:1)
who gave us the formula we use
to this very day (i.e., "Blessed art
Thou — who —") using both the
second as well as the third person
in addressing the Almighty. Some
commentators , consider this form'
as simply a continuation of the'
original Biblical style which evi-
dently was used in oriental texts'
in those days. This is drawn, for
example, from the sequence of ver-
ses in one of the Psalms (Psalms
145) where one verse states "All
your works give thanks to You
0 Lord" while a succeeding verse
states "to make known to the sons
of man His mighty acts."
Some commentators claim (e.g..
Ibn Yarchi) that when one men-
tions the name of the Almighty one

becomes aware of the great span
of distance between Him and us.
Others (e.g., Rabbi Isaac ben

Asher) claim that this indicates
a blend of philosophical attitudes.
The Almighty is both revealed and
hidden from us. The fact that He

nature and its phenomena. On the
other hand, His true and exact
nature is incomprehensible to us
and beyond our grasp. On the one
hand it is possible to draw near

to the Almighty. In doing so how-
ever, we realize that we can never
actually reach Him completely. He
is therefore both immanent in the
n:ittire of things and yet trans-

Another source t Machzor Vitri)
states that both forms of expres -
sion are used so as to understand
that. on the one hand we are in

while on the other hand we seem
