The Maccabaean Festival te ches mankind that lovers of
religious liberty will not abandon their ideals, while striving for
peace and the right of all faiths to observe their inherited traditions.
May the present season teach mankind anew that destruc-
tive forces, whether they are in our own midst, as an annoyance
to established law and order, or foreign elements seeking power
and domination, can not long endure.
May this Hanuka bring us closer to peace and to amity for

Proclaim liberty throughout the land
unto all the inhabitants thereof.
—Leviticus 25:10
Just as the Founding Fathers of this great Republic saw fit to
4pscribe these words on the Liberty Bell, in Philadelphia, so do
Vt'-e reiterate it on Hanuka, rejoicing in the freedoms that we and
mankind must attain.
This is the motivating thought for Hanuka, the great festival of
the Maccabees.
We celebrate the historic event to reaffirm loyalty to our faith,
to hold fast to the love for freedom, to oppose tyranny, to pray
that all mankind may be spared the agonies of persecutions.
May Hanuka bring joy to every Jewish household and to the
entire world.
