End Vietnam War, Hashomer Hatzair Convention Urges
' NEW YORK — Rabbi Abraham
L. Feinberg of Toronto told the
concluding session of the sixth
national biennial convention of
Americans for Progressive Israel-
Hashomer Hatzair on Sunday that
"the Soviet Union'; campaign
against Israel in the United Na
tions and her revived build-up of
Arab armament are a deeply dis-
appointing exhibition of callous-
ness and power politics. But the
guilt of Russia does not diminish
by an iota the guilt of America in
Vietnam, nor does Moscow hypoc-
risy erase the indefensible in-'
humanity, ' dangerous folly and
patent immorality of our escala-
tion of a war no one can win in
a place we have no right to be,"
he declared in his talk to the more:
than 500 delegates who attended
the convention Dec. 8-10 at the
Park Sheraton Hotel.
The convention elected Avrahm
Schenker and Moshe Kagan, co-
chairmen of Americans for Pro-
gressive Israel-Hashomer Hatzair.
The convention passed resolu-
tions which called for an end to
the war in Vietnam, demanding
the punishment of war criminals,
and for the passage of the UN
resolution on human rights.
The left-wing, American Zionist
group called for direct peace nego-
tiations between Israel and the
Arab states whereby Israel would
relinquish occupied Arab territory
with the exception of Jerusalem,
the Gaza Strip and defense posi-
tions on the Golan Heights in ex-
change for free navigation through
the Suez Canal and Straits of
Tiran, and certain border adjust-
ments necessary to Israel's secur-
ity.
A resolution outlining such a
peace plan and envisioning demili-
tarized Middle East with "federa-
tive ties" between all sovereign
states in the area was adopted by
the 500 delegates.
Addressing the convention, Natan
Peled, a member of the Knesset
(Israel's Parliament), said that
no foreign intervention , only direct
negotiations between the Jews and
the Arabs, will solve the Middle
East problem and, until peace
negotiations b e g i n, Israel will
maintain the present cease-fire
boundaries. He warned, however,
that "anyone who proposes the
annexation of the territories pres-
ently held by Israel, as well as
those who demand withdrawal to
the June 5 boundaries, undermine
the struggle for peace and secur
ity."
