Why is it required to pronounce
a benediction before performing I
one of the commandments of the
Tora?
This is one of the three cate-
yeries of blessings enumerated by
Maimonides (Laws of Blessings,
1.41. Generally speaking the bless-
ing offered before enjoying one of
life's bounties (such as a fruit or;
bread. etc.) is a means of express-1
ing our recognition that whatever
we enjoy in life is something that
the Almighty has granted us from
his infinite storehouse of treasures.
By reciting the blessing we receive
permission to take something from,
this world which technically all !
belongs to the Almighty. Just as I
this is true of material objects
which we enjoy (such as food,
clothing, etc.) it is also true of the
;intangible objects in life. Perform-
! ing a commandment of the faith is
thus looked upon as a privilege
which has been granted to us by
the Almighty. In a sense, we thank
Him for having considered us
worthy enough to perform this com-
mandment. It is a privilege to be
able to serve him.

Why is it that for certain com-
mandments no blessings are chant-
ed beforehand (e.g. such as the
giving of charity)?
Call KE 3-5884 or KE 5-4470
Even though our practice is not oif0
to do so, it is interesting to note
that there are rabbinic authorities
who stated that one should make
a blessing before the fulfillment
of any commandment including
such as "rising before an elder,
etc." (Eliyahu of London, p. 31,
etc.). Rabbi Joseph Karo in his
commentary to the Code of Mai-
monides (Kesef Mishnah, Yad,
Blessings 11:2) contends that those
commandments which involve in-
ter-personal relationships require
no blessings before their perform-
ance. This is explained by the un-
derstanding that a commandment
involving interpersonal relation-
ships require the cooperation of
other individuals in order to be
performed properly, Thus charity
requires the acceptance of the re-
cipient. Since the recipient may
not accept our gift, no blessing is
recited before the gift is given
(Avudraham, p. 18). Other authors
give another reason. The blessing
offered before the performance of
a commandment states "who sancti-
fied us by his commandments and
commanded us to . . ." This indi-
cates to us that this performance
sets up apart from other peoples
because they were not commanded
to do so. This may be true of
ritualistic performances which af-
fect only the relationship of the
Jew to the Almighty (e.g., like
tefillin, tzitzit, etc.). This is in-
applicable to basic ethical behavior
which is expected of all peoples
(e.g., like charity, an act of res-
pect for one's elders, etc.). Some
claim another reason to be the
basis for this distinction. Benedic-
tions are pronounced only before
those acts which enable us to car-
ry out the required performance
in its entirety. Thus one pronounc-
ed a benediction before holding *
the lulav and its accompanying
vegetative species because when he
holds the species he completely *
fulfills the commandment, while
this is true of ritualistic perform-
ances it is not true of ethical be-
havior. For example, no one can
fulfill the complete requirements
of respecting one's father or
mother with the performance of
one deed. Nor can one exhaust his
requirement to give charity with
one contribution. Commandments
such as these are never finished
in their sense of obligation upon us.
Therefore, the benediction is
omitted.
