El Fatah Renews Terrorism; Jordan Tells Christian Arabs to Stay Out of Israel TEL AVIV (JTA) — Explosives planted by saboteurs damaged the fuel storage tank at a water pump- ing station south of Kibutz Maoz Hayim in the Beisan Valley Satur- day night. The footprints of four persons were found leading to the banks of the Jordan River about 85 feet away. It was the third ma- jor sabotage attempt last weekend. Six members of an El Fatah ter- rorist unit were killed, and a n•im- ber arrested, Friday, in a com- bined action by Army security forces and border police near Nablus, in the occupied West Bank. Israel had announced that Jordan- ian Christians would be permitted entry to the West Bank to celebrate Christmas at Bethlehem. The Amnesty Review, quarterly publication of Amnesty Interna- tional, reported there were only between 200 and 400 Jews still being held in Egyptian jails and that they were "treated well, or at least not any worse than the other inmates." The periodical al- so asserted that there were about 3,000 members of the outlawed Moslem Brotherhood imprisoned in Egypt hat called the government's claim that at least 70,000 persons are incarcerated a "highly exa ,, gerated figure." The Tel Aviv newspaper Maariv, reporting on Wednesday that only 200 Jews remain in Egyptian in- ternment camps out of 500 arrested during last June's Six-Day War, said some of those released were per- mitted to emigrate to Italy and France and efforts are being made to secure the release of the remain- ing internees. The fair treatment accorded Egyptian nationals by Is- raeli occupation authorities in El Arish and Gaza is believed to have contributed to a relaxed attitude on the part of Egyptian authorities toward Egyptian Jews, Maariv said. Soviet Russia is not only re- arming Egypt but has the train- ing of Egyptian armed forces completely in its hands through huge cadres of technicians and instructors now on Egyptian soil and a training and planning mis- sion reportedly headed by 15 So- viet generals attached to a com- bined Soviet-Egyptian headquar- ters, Clare Hollingworth reported from Cairo to the London Daily Telegraph. But the Russians. she said, "Insist on keeping their fingers on the trigger of the sophisticated offensive non-nu- clear weapons" that they have supplied to Egypt and demand the same control over weapons supplied to Syria, Iraq, Yeman and Algeria and even to Jordan "should the Russians, as every- one expects, begin to supply them with arms." Miss Hollingworth reported that there are 3,000 Russians, Czechs, Bulgarians and Poles in Egypt and another 1,000 instructors training Egyptian troops in and around the Suez Canal zone. "There is no doubt, even to the most casual ob- sever, that the morale of Egyptian forces has increased enormously Since the period of intensive train- ing with the Russians began," Miss Hollingworth reported, noting that Other Russian groups are at work in plants near Cairo where "new Russian weapons are assembled." She said that, so far, the Russians have not required Egypt to pay for the new arms. terrorists. A substantial quantity of Soviet- and Chinese-made weap- ons and ammunition were found in the cave, including five Kalachini- kov assault rifles, a Chinese sub- machine gun, a bazooka, demoli- tion equipment and ammunition. The court refused to accept the defendant's claim that he was un- aware of his brother's terrorist activities because of the fire arms found. A few hours later, watchmen of Kibutz Neveh Eitan, in the Beisan Valley, foiled a planned attack by El Fatah terrorists. Watchmen ob- served around midnight suspicious persons moving into the kibutz perimeter. When the intruders ig- nored a challenge, the watchmen opened fire on the intruders who turned and began a retreat while shooting back. They headed for the Jordan River, about two miles away. Alerted by the shooting, kibutz members scrambled from their beds, hastened to grab weapons and gave pursuit, some still in underwear or pajamas. The in- truders, covered by the terrain, managed to escape. When the kibutz members returned, they made a search for explosives and found seven charges placed under a number of kibutz dwell- ings. The explosives were dis- mantled. A second soldier in the jeep was not injured. The attackers evaded a search begun immediately after the incident and apparently succeeded in crossing the Jordan River. Autopsy Establishes Pilot Downed in Jordan Was Beaten to Death TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israel filed a formal complaint with the In- ternational Red Cross against the murder of David Nevo, a fighter pilot shot down over Jordan during a clash Nov. 21. His body, returned by Jordanian authorities only last Friday, showed evidence that he had been killed by blows from rocks and clubs. An autopsy was per- formed Friday in the presence of a Red Cross representative. It is believed that the pilot, whom Israelis had seen parachuting to the ground after his plane was hit, was attacked by Arab civilians. The body was received by Is- raeli authorities with full military honors at the newly-repaired Al- lenby Bridge, near Jericho, and was brought to the late pilot's home at Kibutz Yifat in the central Jezreel Valley, where .his family and friends paid their last respects. Nevo is survived by his wife and two children. Helicopters and infantry patrols continued to comb the area for traces of the El Fatah gang. Congressmen See New Threat to Israel's Security in Egypt-Based Soviet Bombers WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. J. Herbert Burke, Florida Rep., charged in the House that the USSR has taken "another giant step to command military control of the Middle East and Mediter- ranean by basing a squadron of TU-16 jet bombers, complete with ground crews and pilots, in Egypt." He said the TU-16 was equivalent to the American B-52 giant bomber and was equipped with the latest weaponry. He said it was signifi- cant that the Russian planes were based in Egypt because it marked "the first time the Soviet Union has supplied pilots and complete crews along with their military planes to countries outside the Soviet bloc." Rep. Leonard Farbstein, New York Dem., said that the Russians want Israel "to understand that Russian airpower is available to Egypt should the USSR decide to take the Arab side in the renewal of the Mideast conflict." Citing the French refusal to honor arms sale contracts with Israel, Rep. Farb- stein said the United States must make available adequate jets to Israel to defend herself in view of the Arab refusal to make peace.
