THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 1, 1967 - 39 OBITUARIES Mrs. Mendes-France Dies at Age 56; Statesman's Wife Cousin of Detroiters Mrs. Pierre Mendes-France, the former French premier's wife, died in Foch Hospital, Paris, Monday, after a long illness, at the age of 56. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Bernard, 32, a govern- ment statistician, and Michel, 31, professor of mathematics in the Paris Faculty of Sciences, and cousins in the United States. Mrs. Mendes-France was the for- mer Lily Cicurel, a native of Cairo, who left Egypt when she was 10. The late Haim Cicurel, who was Everet Straus, 48 • • Headed Computer Dimensions, Inc. Everet M. Straus, co-founder and chairman of the board of Com- puter Dimensions, Inc., data proc- essors, died Nov. 23 at age 48. Mr. Straus, 18057 Sorrento, was born in Paterson, N. J. He was a member of Temple Beth El, board member of the American Jewish Committee, past board member of the Men's Club of Temple Beth El, and member of both the University of Chicago Alumni Association and the Citi- zens Advisory Committee on School Finance. He leaves his wife, Kathleen; a son, Peter; a daughter, Barbara; his mother, Mrs. Elsie Oppen- heimer of Harrison, N.Y.; and a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Anita) Weber of Chevy Chase, Md. Walter Bagdade , 9 Chemist at MIT Dr. Walter A. G. Bagdade, for- mer Detroiter, of Brighton, Mass., a research chemist at the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology, died Nov. 23 at age 28. Born in Detroit, Mr. Bagdade was graduated from MIT in 1962 and received his PhD from the Un- iversity, of California at Berkeley in 1966. He leaves his wife, Edith; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bagdade; a brother, Dr. John D. of Seattle; and two sisters, Mrs. Richard (June) Swartz of Ann Arbor and Alice. Interment De- troit. Jacob Arbit, Age 70 Jacob Arbit, retired fruit dealer who was past president of Cong. Shaarey Shomayim and of the Ostrovitzer Friendship Society, died Sunday at age 70. Mr. Arbit, 18695 Ilene, also was a board member of the Hebrew Benevolent Society. Born in Po- land, he lived in Detroit 47 years. Surviving are his wife, Clara; two sons, Dr. Saul B. of Milwau- kee and Dr. S. Meyer of Detroit; two daughters, Mrs. Ben (Rose) Magy and Mrs. Laurence (Shirley) White; a brother, Charles of Bos- ton and a sister, Mrs. Hyman (Becky) Gold of Boston; and 12 grandchildren. Sol Cicurel, of 24500 Manistee, Oak Park, Haim Cicurel's son, states that the Cicurel family traces its background to pre-Span- ish Inquisition days. He said that ))r. Cecil Roth is working on a Cicurel Family Tree and it is be- lieved that the Cicurels are among the oldest known Spanish Jews. Mrs. Mendes-France's family owned the largest department store in Cairo. Sol Cicurel stated that the family businesses have now been confiscated by Nasser and that family possessions in Alexandria also have been taken over by the Egyptian dictator. Mme. Mendes-France's father, Salvatore Ci cur e I, who had earned the title Bey from pre- dictorial regimes, was prseident of the Jewish Community of Egypt for 30 years before his stores were taken over by the anti-Israel regimes and before he and his family moved to Italy. Educated at the Sorbonne, spe- cializing in psychology and later in art, Mme. Mendes-France took refuge in Morocco and later in the United States while her husband served as a bomber navigator in the Free French Lorraine Squadron. Mrs. Molly Seligson, 76 GUSSIE ADEL, 3347 W.
