'Pulitzer'--Swanberg

Joseph Pulitzer was one of the
very great if not the greatest of
the early creators of a thoroughly
American press.
He belonged to the age of per-
sonal journalism but in the main
he was the dynamic architect of
the leading medium of communica-
tions for Americans.
The dramatic story of his life
is recorded in a fascinating bio-
graphy - "Pulitzer," by W. A.
Swanberg - published by Charles
Scribner's Sons. Combined in this
significant work is history linked
with the courage of an individual
who inspired a generation.
There is no reference to the
Jewish experiences of the Pul-
itzer family in the Swanberg
biography, other than this: "His
father, Philip Pulitzer, was a
cultivated Magyar-Jew grain
dealer; his mother, born Louise
Berge r, an Austro-German
beauty and a Catholic."
Thus, contrary to many beliefs,
Pulitzer was not a Jew, his mother
having been Catholic. The Puli-
tzer clan, however, never shirked
from references to the paternal
Jewish relationships.
Swanberg's biographical sketch
is, as indicated, history as well
as a review of the career of a
man and his newspapers. It is
the history of America of the
latter part of the last and the
first decade of the present cen-
turies.
His, indeed, was a courageous
task, defying Presidents when
principles and ideas conflicted. He
struggled to create a great news-
paper and the World emerged as
his superb creation, with the St.
Louis Post-Dispatch following as

Protestant Scholar Assails
Editor for Pro-Arab Stand

TORONTO (JTA)-A Protestant
divinity professor has accused the
editor of a Protestant church maga-
zine of "carelessly" using Arab
propaganda material and anti-
Semitic sources in support of the
consistently pro-Arab stand taken
by the periodical on the Middle
East.
Prof. David Demson, lecturer in
Christian doctrine at Emanuel Col-
lege here, a beneficiary of the
United Church, challenged Rev.
A. C. Forrest, editor of the United
Church Observer, to reveal the
sources of the anti-Israel material
it had published. He said he did
not believe the periodical was de-
liberately anti-Semitic, despite its
publication of Arab propaganda
material alleging Israeli atrocities
against Arab children. The United
Church is Canada's largest Pro-
testant denomination.

newspaper into a crusading tool
of reform. He vividly recounts
Pulitzer's bitter circulation wars
with Hearst and other rivals, his
fanatical interest in politics and
his powerful role in directing the
nation's affairs.
Swanberg has captured the
paradoxical nature of Pulitzer-
a devoted husband and father who
saw little of his family,• a shame-
less manipulator of people who
cried out angrily at injustice to
humanity, a millionaire who was
the arch foe of capitalists and
trusts. Pulitzer sought peace all
his life yet waged endless war
with his foes, including Theodore
Roosevelt and William Jennings
Bryan. Swanberg's biography de-
licates these history developments
with great skill.

another great American product.
Author of the best-selling "Citi-
zen Hearst" and "Dreiser," W. A.
Swanberg has won international
acclaim as an outstanding his-
torian-biographer. Now, with "Pul-
itzer," he has written a fascinating
account of the life and times of
one of the most remarkable men
in American history.
Virtually blind and tormented
by mental and physical illnesses
for most of his life, Joseph
Pulitzer was a genius and an
eccentric on a grand scale.
Swanberg follows Pulitzer from
his early days as a penniless im-
migrant reporter to his towering
position as publisher of the in-
fluential New York World and
he shows how this pioneer in
hard-hitting journalism turned his
