Flannery, a leading Cath- olic advocate of rapprochement with the Jews. LAS VEGAS DECEMBER 18th The statement called on Chris- tians, as Christians, to make their voices heard in support of Israel and when necessary "sound the alarm" when Jews and Israel were in danger. The statement then made five "af- STAG CALL 864-2165 32—Friday, December 1, 1967 Mcg firmations" on the Mideast crisis. The first was a denial of Arab- Soviet charges of Israeli aggres- sion in June. The statement said that Israel's initial strike at the Egyptian air force was "clearly an act of defense" and "the oper- ation of a country that refuses to be strangled." The second was a ringing defense of Israel's right to a peaceful existence. The state- ment traced Jewish ties to the Holy Land over the centuries and said they had a right to remain securely on the soil., which they had re- claimed and additionally, " a voca- tion to live for the Lord. We hope that it will be granted them to bear witness to the God of Abra- ham, Isaac and Jacob as never before." The third affirmation f u 11 y backed Israel's insistence on hold- ing present cease-fire lines until permanent boundaries were estab- lished by peace treaties, calling that stand "reasonable and fair." The fifth affirmation categori- cally denied that the Jews drove the Arabs out in the 1948 war and denounced the Arab countries for shutting refugees up in camps. However, for "the sake of justice and peace," the statement said Israel should again offer financial compensation to refugees who lost homes and farms, as well as aid in uniting separated Arab refugee families. It called for an interna- tional resettlement fund for the refugees but warned that solution of the problem probably would have to wait until Arab-Israel THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS peace was established. SAM AND LIL DICTOR, former Detroiters now living in Los An- geles, were in town for a week re- cently enroute to Florida, Nassau and a cruise around South Ameri- ca and Acapulco . . . and no one would believe they've been away from here for many years . Sam and Lil's popularity in the ol' home town is amazing, and even a month's stay would not be ample time for them to see everyone they'd like ... That's why corning to Detroit for a short stay is not exactly their cup of tea . . . While here, Sam and Lil stayed with her sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Phil Edelheit ... 'Twould be impossible to mention all the old friends that Sam and Lil came in contact with . .. so many that to leave out even one would be un- fair ... Sam walked into Max's Deli on Southfield and 13 Mile, to dis- cover it was owned by Max "Tootle" Horenstein, who played basketball at the Jewish Community Center on Woodward while Sam was a coach there . . . Although each is from different playing days, they talked of their baseball and basketball coach at Northern High, Eddie Powers, who is now living in California . . . Eddie recently was invited by Sam to play golf on the West Coast with "a couple of bro- ken down baseball players" . . . Coach Eddie almost flipped when he discovered himself to be part of Sam's foursome that included baseball greats Jimmy Piersall and Sandy Koufax. THREE DESERVING gals were given a testimonial dinner last week by Infants Service Group ... Vera Erode, Jennie Kopelman and Mildred Sklar . . . It was a hus- bands and wives affair to laud these fine members for their outstanding years of service to ISG . . . The group's Cherub Ball dinner-dance is March 10 at Latin Quarter. TO CARRY OUT their fine phil- anthropic projects, United Order True Sisters hold its "Games Night," Dec. 7, at Labor Zionist Institute on Schaefer ... The gals do much toward cancer service and research, hospital grants for medically indigent patients, wheel chairs and hospital beds and ser- vice to visually handicapped child- ren in the Detroit Public Schools. L. P. ALBUM RECENTLY re- leased is a first for three local producer-writers, Cy Rott, Sheldon Rott and Myron Stein, who have put out "War? You Gotta Be Kid- ding!" with the Bobby Rodgers review The album satirizes the Middle-East War, the United Na- tions, national politics, etc. and is on their own Big Sound Records label. CORRECTED FOR HIS table manners and finally for his lang- uage at the table, Todd Aaron Lev- enson, 4-year-old son of Shirley and Ray Levenson, continued to talk cheerfully though unanswered to Ray, who was using the old- fashioned method of ignoring the little gent ... Finally, Todd turned to Sylvia and remarked, "Your husband doesn't talk much, does he, mother?"
