THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Hasidic Artists -- Both Rabbis --
to Be Featured at WSU Exhibit
Julius Rotenberg, general chair-
man of the annual Habad Dinner,
announced there will be a new
dimension in art shown at the
exhibition of Hasidic art to take
place at Wayne State University's
Community Arts Exhibit Hall, Dec.
13-17.
The world-famous sculptor Jac-
ques Lipchitz will open the spon-
sors preview 5 p.m. Dec. 12, fol-
lowed by a Sponsors Dinner.
Chairman of the exhibit commit-
tee is Irwin I. Cohn, and dinner
committee chairman is Robert
Ruch.
The event is for the benefit of
Camp Can Israel of Fenton, whose
chairman is Charles E. Feinberg;
the Habad Vocational Schools in
Israel, under chairman Harry
Schumer; and the Kfar Habad
Medical Center, chairman Mrs.
Rachel Kurtzman.
The exhibition will feature the
works of Rabbis Chenoch Lieber-
man and Zalman Kleinman.
Rabbi Lieberman, while pursu-
ing religious studies in Russia,
became interested in art as a
youth, and was awarded a six-year
scholarship to the Moscow Art In-
stitute. He completed the course
in three years with high honors.
H i s paintings
were exhibited in
he National Gal-
lery of Moscow,
the famed Tre-
tryakov, where
two of his works
are hanging to-
day. Rabbi Lie-
berman has had
exhibits at Du-
veen's in New
York and at art
Rotenberg galleries in Paris,
London, South America and Aus-
tralia. Many of his paintings depict
scenes from life in the Jewish
"shtetl" of Eastern Europe of days
gone by, and are realistic in style—
the realism of the deeply religious
artist of the 13th and 14th Cen-
turies of Italy.
Rabbi Kleinman is a well-known
graphic artist of Brooklyn, whose
sketches and drawings illustrate
many Jewish publications.
Whole volumes have been writ-
ten about the works of Lipchitz,
among the more well-know being
"Encounters" by Irene Patai and
"The Artist at Work."
Cohn announced that those
wishing to obtain tickets for the
Sponsors Preview of Hasidic Art
and Dinner should call the Habad
office, 398-2611, since only limited
space is now available.
In conjunction with this affair,
a special television presentation,
"Habad in Focus," will be shown
