Stollman Will Receive National
University Honor December 17

Phillip Stollman of Detroit has been named to receive the first
Pinchas Churgin Award of Bar-Ilan University, at the dinner marking
the university's 13th anniversary, Dec. 17, at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel in New York.
Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas will be the guest speaker.
Max M. Fisher is honorary dinner chairman. Albert Parker heads
the dinner committee, and Edward Adams is associate chairman.
Reservations for the dinner at $125 a person are now being taken
by the American Bar-Ilan office, 641 Lexington, NY22.
The late Dr. Pinchas Churgin in whose memory the new citation
has been established was the founding president of Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity which is located in Ramat Gan, Israel.

Mrs. Stollman Defines Bar-Ilan's
Tasks; Lookstein Chides de Gaulle

Outlines of the progress attained
at Bar-Ilan University in Israel,
recognition of the labors of De-
troiters in behalf of the university
and rebukes to Charles de Gaulle
for his anti-Israel position were
heard at the annual dinner of the
university's friends, attended by
approximately 900. at Cobo Hall,
Wednesday night.
Mrs. Max Sollman, national
chairman of the Bar-Ilan Women's
Division, in a major address, told
of the increase of the university's
student body from 80 13 years ago
to the present 3,500. She empha-
sized that the school is not a theo-
logical college but a full-scale uni-
versity teaching all subjects, with
emphasis on Judaica, and she point-
ed out that Bar-Ilan could not or-
dain rabbis because 55 per cent of
the students are girls.
In other explanatory remarks,
Avern Cohn, who presided, said
that the university needs 30 pec
cent of its income from co lar
tributions because 20 per cent
comes from tuition and 50 per
cent is provided by government

funds.
Samuel Frankel, general chair-
man of the dinner arrangements
committee, in opening greetings to
the gathering, the largest to at-
tend a Bar-Ilan dinner here, paid I
honor to the Stollman — Philip,'
Max and Frieda — for their dedi-
cated labors to the cause. He com-
mended the director of the Detroit
Friends of Bar-Ilan University for
his tireless efforts which contribute
greatly to the success of the spon-
sored dinners.
A musical program, featuring
also the singing of "Yerushalayim
shel Zahav —Jerusalem of Gold"
in both Hebrew and English,
was given by Cantor Louis Klein,
who also led in the singing of the
national anthems and in the Ben-
shen. The invocation was given by
Rabbi Samuel H. Prero.
Dr. Joseph H. Lookstein, chan-
cellor of the university, whose
speech was devoted to a repudi-
ation of the attacks on Israel by
French President Charles de
Gaulle, was introduced by Max
M. Fisher, who last month was
awarded the honorary degree of
Doctor of Humanities at Bar-Han

Post Office Warns That Holiday Rush Looms

Postmaster Edward L. Baker re-
minded Detroit area residents that
the post office is quickly appi.oach-
ing its holiday rush period, and
all indications point - to a record
volume of mail this year.
"To move this avalanche of mail
successfully," Baker said, "the co-
operation of the mailing public is
necessary. Early mailing and the
use of ZIP Code are essential."
The Postmaster recommended
the use of first class postage for
the most efficient service in mail-
ing greeting cards. Cards paid
at the 5 cents per ounce first class
rate will be forwarded if the ad-
dressee has moved, or will be re-
turned to the sender when un-
deliverable, if there is a return
address. Unsealed cards paid at
the 4 cents third class rate will

not be forwarded or returned if
undeliverable as addressed.
The Post Office recommends
that all mail be addressed on one
side only, showing the return ad-
dress complete with ZIP Code
number in the upper left corner.
