Ont. Center Rejects Gift
of Land by City Officials

HAMILTON, Ont. (JTA)—Offi-
cials of the Jewish Center turned
down a gift from the city of Ham-
ilton of a large piece of choice
property as the site for a new
center building after much debate.
The rejected gift consisted of
several acres of a park near the
Anshe Sholom Synagogue. Under
terms of the gift, land would have
been available not only for the
building but also for outdoor ten-
nis and handball courts, a swim-
ming pool and parking and play
areas. The land was to have been
made available without charge to
the Council of Jewish Organiza-
tions which was to be responsible
only for the cost of constructing
the new building.
Officials reluctantly decided to
turn down the offer because there
were strings attached. Title to the
land and to the projected building
was to have remained with the
city. A member of the Hamilton
city council was to have a seat
on the center executive board, and
the building would have to be open
to everyone in the community who
wanted membership.
