Accumulating Libels Against Jewry Debunked:
Khazar Charge Among New At it i-Semitic Lies
Anti-Israeli propagandists and a

combination of anti-Semites have
stepped up propaganda not only
against Israel but against Jews,
using the old cliche about the
Zionist aggressor but in the mean-
time assailing all Jewry.
An old-new argument against
Israel, Zionism and Jews gener-
ally has been introduced: the claim
that Jews are not Jews at all but
are descendants of the Khazars.
with a Turkish origin.
Another argument advanced is
that Israel was fathered by Hitler
and Hitlerism.
Both arguments were used by
one of the extremest propagandists
against Israel and Zionism — a
Jew who spoke in Michigan univer-
sities last week.
A refutation of Hussein's attack
on Israel, charging that it stems
from the Nazi era, appeared in the
New York Times. Dr. Joseph Run-
ner, professor of political science
and international law at Yeshiva
University, wrote as follows:

King

Hussein's statement
that the Palestine partition reso-
lution of the UN in November
1947 was motivated by sympathy
with the survivors of the Hitler-
ian holocaust is probably true.
But the claim of the Jews to
Palestine is not based on any
UN decision or, for that matter,
on the B a If our Declaration.
While Arab history was made in
Arabia, Jewish history was made
in Judea, or, as Jews called it
since Biblical days, Eretz Israel,
the Land of Israel.
"Palestine" is a name which
the Romans gave that land after
the conquest of Jerusalem in the
year 70 to obliterate the very
memory of a Jewish statehood
and with the full knowledge that
the Philistines, once the inhab-
itants of the Gaza region, no
longer existed.
As an American Zionist who
has never shirked his civic re- 1
sponsibilities, I resent the insin-
nation of a foreign guest that
Zionism engenders the fear of
"dual loyalty between being a
political American and a politi-'
cal Jew." Hussein seems to con-;
fuse America with his own coun-
try, Hitler Germany or Soviet
Russia. I should like to remind
King Hussein that America
stands for cultural pluralism and
not for the totalitarian strait-
jacket.
American Jews know but one
political loyalty, that to the
USA. But this does not prevent
them from assisting the State of
Israel, the only democracy of the
Middle East, in its absorption of
the Jewish homeless and in its
efforts to spark a Jewish cultural
renaissance.
Hussein wants us to believe
that it is the "Zionists" who, to
expand the area of Israel, caused
the Arab refugee problems in
1948 and again in the June war
of 1967. May I remind the king,
that as early as Sept. 29, 1947,
Jamal el Husseini, in the name
of the "Arab Higher Committee."
speaking before the ad hoc com- 1
mittee of the UN General As-
sembly, uncompromisingly re-;
jected not only the partition plan
of the UN which the World
Zionist Organization had accep- 1
ted but even the alternative plan
for a federated Palestine.
I have before me an Arab leaf-
let which was distributed
throughout Syria, Jordan and the
UAR in April 1967 entitled
"Into the Sea!" showing the last
Jewish survivors of Israel beg-
ging their steel-helmeted Arab
pursuers to rescue them from
drowning in the Mediterranean.
How consistent is this propa-
ganda for genocide with Hus-
sein's accusation about Israel's
"recent aggression?" Hussein,
who prohibited Jewish worship
in old Jerusalem, who did noth-
ing to prevent the desecration
of synagogues and Jewish graves!
in his portion of Palestine, now
declares that whether there will
be "peace, friendship and relig-

ions liberty . . . depends on Is-
rael and what it does in the
very near future."
If the king and his allies really
wish for "peace, friendship and
religious liberty," all they have
to do is refrain from further
warfare against Israel and nego-
tiate a peace treaty.

The Khazar charge is being re-
peated ad nauseam. The issue was
discussed in an article in the Jew-
view of London and a comment on
it in a letter by R. Ainsztein point-
ed out the following:

I have read with great profit
Ephraim Lahav's article "Israe-
lis are not Jews," but it is a pity
that he does not make it clear
to your readers that there is
nothing new or original about
Professor Bormann's and other
German Nazis' racial explana-
tion of the military qualities of
Israelis.
The theory that the Jews who
came from Central and Eastern

Europe to settle in Israel are not
really Jews but a mixture of
Slays and Khazars has been I

peddled by Arabs for years. And
Polish anti-Semites before the
war, including the leading Polish
anthropologist Professor Czekan-
owski who was not a Judeophobe,.
"explained" the pioneering abili-
tiesof the Jewish halutzim from
Poland, Russia and Germany as
due to the "Nordic" genes in i
them. As proof they quoted the
number of blue - eyed Jewish
children born in Palestine.
It is a pity that Lahav appears
to know as little about the Kha-

zars as the German professor.
The Khazars were a people of
mixed Ugro-Finnish and Turkish
origin speaking a Turki dialect
akin to the language spoken by
the Chuvashes today. There is
no doubt that they contributed
some of their genes to Russian
and Polish Jewry, but it was a
contribution much less important
than that made by Slays and
Prussians to the body of the
German people. Anyway, their
descendants were certainly not
blue-eyed and fair-haired. The
Karaites of the Crimea and Lith-
uania, who are undoubtedly of
Khazar origin, have swarthy, or-
iental features, and look much
more like Bagdadi or Caucasian
Jews than Russian or Polish,

Unemployed Israelis

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Friday, December 1, 1967-11

REHOVOT (ZINS) — The num-
ber of unemployed in Israel now
total 30,000 and there are prospects
that each month will see a reduc-
tion in their numbers, a spokesman
of the ministry of labor told a
workers' gathering here. He added
that at this time a shortage of
skiled workers is being felt in va-
rious fields of production and pre-
dicted that in time even unskilled
manpower wit find employment.
