Dr. M. M. Kaplan Calls

Israelis now feel that their brethren in the United States will stand
watchfully by their side with aid as long as their emergency situation
lasts . . . This emergency situation is noted in the country by the fact
that fathers and sons in many families are still absent from their
homes . . . They are still in uniform keeping vigil somewhere on the
fronts in Sinai, Jordan, Syria and Egypt . . . Thousands of them are
serving on military duty in cities like Gaza, Hebron, El Arish, Kuinetra
and other Arab cities and villages which fell into Israel's hands . . .
A strong spirit of enmity is still being felt among the Arabs and
Israel must be on the alert . . . Not to speak of the sporadic provoca-
tions by Arabs against which Israel must be on guard . . . Worst of all
is the fact that although Israel has won the war, it has not won the
peace . . . And as long as there is no peace, none in Israel can permit
himself neither to slumber nor to sleep in guarding the security of
the country . . . This is why the Israelis grpeted with elation the fact
that the UJA Study Mission, visiting Israel, has decided without any
hesitation to share the burden with the people of Israel and to continue
the Israel Emergency Fund campaign in 1968. . This was to them
an *expression of Jewish solidarity, which they cherish most, having
few friends in the world and being surrounded by hostile nations.
