in an interview with the Jewish
Chronicle. He refuted a recent de-
fense of government by Lord Avon.

What has raised the issue is the
forthcoming American publication,
of a book accusing the United
States government of being ob-
structive and passive on the ques-
tion of rescuing Jews in Nazi-
occupied Europe. The book. "While!
Six Million Died: A Chronicle of
American Apathy." by Arthur D.
Morse, has stimulated examination,
of the British government's record '
as well.
For the book. to be published
by Random House in February,
Morse was allowed access to
official records in Washington,
London. Geneva and Stockholm. i
Lord Avon, in a letter to the
Chronicle. insisted that "everything!
possible was done" to prevent "the I
most appalling catastrophe of our
times." However. Dr. Riegner said
later that the Allied governments)
showed a "lack of imagination in
devising the extraordinary mea-1
sures required outside the normal,1
