Israel Encourages Volunteers to Remain TEL AVIV—Israel is encourag- ing young Jews, age 20 to 30, to spend six months to a year as volun- teers here. Col. Amihai Tsur, head of the Volunteer Authority appoint- ed by the government, said it is hoped that the wartime influx of volunteers will be transformed in- to a sustained and organized peace- time movement. Even those who decide not to settle will be considered links be- tween the Jews of Israel and com- munities abroad. Some 700 of the 3.500 volunteers who came for three or four months changed their status to temporary residents, which entitled them to housing, loans and other privileges accruing to immigrants. Among these 700, 400 enrolled in universities, 60 or 70 joined kibutzim and the remainder found jobs in the cities. Detroiter Leon Waldman, who graduated f r o m Mumford High School and the University of Michi- gan, is among 31 students who were admitted to the school of Judaica of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America this month.
