Gov. Williams Honored by Labor, Industry
at Histad rut Testimonial Attended by 1,000
More than 1,000 persons hon-
ored former Governor G. Men-
nen Williams Sunday at a testi-
monial dinner attended by a num-
ber of notables in labor, business
and industry. Sponsor was the
American Trade Union Council
for Histradrut.
Toastmaster was August Scholle,
president of the Michigan AFL-
CIO. Others on the program in-
cluded Emil Mazey, secretary-
treasurer of UAW; Isaac Litwak,
president of Local 285 Laundry
and Linen Drivers; Morris Lieb-
erman, chairman of the Detroit
Israel Histadrut Campaign; and
Shimshon Arad, ambassador of
Israel to Mexico.
Ambassador Arad praised the
work of Histadrut in areas which
are of vital interest to the United
States. These, areas include many
of the countries which have only
recently gained their indepen-
dence. Histadrut's experts are sent
to these countries where they teach
local officials and labor leaders
the methods being applied suc-
cessfully in Israel. The Afro-As-
ian Institutes in Tel-Aviv is a
Histadrut institution which re-
ceives financial assistance from
the American labor movement,
particularly the Autombolie -Work-
ers Union. This institute grad..ates
hundreds of foreign students each
year.
Gov. Williams, who served as
assistant secretary of state for
African affairs, said he knew
from personal experience that
Histadrut is performing a vital
function in Africa and South
America, at a critical moment
when Israel still faces many
unresolved problems at home.
Proceeds from this affair went
toward the establishment of the
G. Mennen Williams Histadrut
Scholarship Fund, to provide Is-
raeli youngsters with financial
assistance to complete their high
school education.

TEL AVIV — A Tel Aviv district
judge ruled Wednesday that a non-
Jewish girl who was seduced by an
Israeli Jew could not sue him for
breach of promise to marry her
because Israeli law bars Jews from
marrying non-Jews.
The ruling was made by Judge
H. S. Levenberg in voiding an ear-
lier court decision barring the
youth from leaving Israel. The
judge said he was not happy with
his ruling but that under the law
there was no other option. The
non-Jewish girl, according to court
records, met the Jewish youth in
Tiberias and she lived. with him,
becoming pregnant: According to
the records, the youth decided to
abandon the girl, and she appealed
for support to the courts, obtain-
ing a stay on her lover's plans to
leave the country. -

6-Day War Surpasses
Hanuka MiriCle, Says
Israel Chief Rabbi
JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Israel's
Chief Rabbi Isser Unterman assert-
ed here that "the miracle of the
Six-Day War surpassed in grandeur
the miracle of Hanuka." Speaking
at a reception in Jerusalem, Rabbi
Unterman declared that the Jews
are a "wise and understanding peo-
ple" and would not agree to re-
treat to the former boundaries
which made its people vulnerable
to constant attacks and aggression
threatening its peace and exist-
ence.
He also voiced faith that after
the great miracle that has been
wrought, the nations of the world
would not try to force Israel to
surrender its victories.
