Alfred Deutsch, Maxwell Jospey to Head '68 Allied Jewish Campaign Alfred L. Deutsch and Maxwell Jospey will lead the 1968 Allied Jewish Campaign, destined to be the greatest effort in fund raising that the Detroit community has seen, Hyman Safran, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, an- nounced. Deutsch, who was 1967 chairman, will be serving his second year. Jospey, who was a pre-campaign chairman last year, will serve as co-chairman. The Allied Jewish Campaign will conduct its regular drive for funds for the support of local, national and overseas agencies. In addition, it will also raise money for the Jospey Deutsch Israel Emergency Fund of the United Jewish Appeal for crucial human needs rising out of the June war. Under the leadership of Deutsch, last year's campaign raised $5,750,000, the second larg- est total in its 41-year history. He is John II. Sengstacke of the Chicago De- fender, who received the award at a luncheon here from Jerome M. Comar. chairman of the AJC chap- ter. Sengstacke and his newspaper were cited for "pointing the way through media to a greater under- standing among men." The defender has cautioned the Negro community and par- ticularly the black power ad- vocates not to forget the "pow- erful voices which have been lifted on behalf of the Negro people" by Jewish communities and their leaders. The Chicago Daily Defender pointed out in an editorial that the "Milwaukee Jewish Council pulled no punches in its declara- tion of support of the civil rights leaders who have been demon- strating for freedom of residence in that Wisconsin city." The edi- torial also cited a resolution ad- opted by the executive board of the Synagogue Council of America , urging the Milwaukee city ad- 1 ministration to enact open hous- ing legislation. "In Kansas City," the editorial noted, "Irving M. Levine, director of education and urban planning of the American Jewish Committee. told the annual meeting of the AJC local chapter that they should organize the intellectual communal and financial resources of the Jew- ish community to do battle against slums and economic tricler-devel- opment." "These powerful voices, which have been on behalf of the Negro peoples' cause, should not be for- gotten when resolutions are passed by the black power hierarchy.
